Car Shakes at Idle

Featured Replies

Mines shakes at idle too, I know of a few to do it. It lessens if the blowers are on full and lessens even more if you put the rear window heater on.

I was worried it was my DMF too, I've since had mine mapped and done about 1500 miles and all is fine :)

Would a broken Gearbox mount cause shaking? - Received the car back yesterday - It will be going in next week for the new mount. They say they have made amendments, I am guessing tightened something up till next week.

Hi Guys,

Thought U would update you on this. Had the Gearbox Mount replaced - Still Shaking on idle... So annoyied with Skoda at the minute.

Going back today to show this to the tech who "drove" my car after the installation and said it was fine.

DMF I reckon as well, my van does it in slow moving traffic from time to time. Needs replaced really...

Took the car back to the garage and had the engineer sit in the car whilst it was shaking. The engineer has said it wasn't doing this when he had replaced the mount and he is sorry. I have the car re-booked in this Thursday as they now think it may be the EGR Valve or a pully that isn't holding right?

I mentioned the DMF and was told if it was that it would shake all the time

An update as to what it is doing as I have noticed a pattern seen as I have had it for around 2 months.

When starting the car in the morning - The car doesn't shake, take it around the block (less than a mile) and the car shakes when the clutch inst pressed plus I get like a grinding noise. (both go away if I press on the clutch)

When the car is a 90 (Fully warmed) it does it every now and then. - Stepping on the clutch sometimes does nothing or makes the shaking less violent.

Will keep you guys posted - I can see this one ending very soon as I am getting very p*ssed at Skoda and they know it.

Unbelievable.

Had it in the garage again today and DM Keith and they do now suspect it is the DMF however to replace this a Skoda rep will need to come out and confirm this... I was then asked If i mind driving it some more until it gets worse so that they can defiantly say it is the DMF!!!! Not a chance... Lets just say the service manager got an ear full when she asked me that!

Looks like I will need to put up with the 1.2 TSI Fabia I was given as a courtesy car for the next couple of weeks.

Thought I would give you all an update.

Thought it would be fair to update this.

A guy called Ben who works for DM Keith had noticed the posts and kindly PM'ed me so I sent him my complaint. I also sent the complaint to Angus as instructed by others on here and now my DMF is in the process of getting replaced so hopefully all being well this will end this post! :)

Will keep you updated to the end guys.

I have had a look into this in general for the 1.9 unit.

On some other forums, A4 and A6 owners have had this fault and mentioned setting the timing. Aparently it goes a few degrees out and this causes the shake on idle. Don't quote me on that but may be worth a look?

I was speaking to a guy today about buying vrs off him . He had the same symptoms as you the shake at idle he ad replaced clutch and flywheel which cured it could be a bearing or something . I hope this helps

Only time will tell. The part has arrived today / getting fitted today - I will be picking it up tomorrow once testing has been completed.

Fingers crossed this fixes it and I never have to go anywhere near the garage again :)

I've just thought about this and I don't actually recall feeling it shaking since having the gearbox rebuilt and the clutch and DMF replaced.

Might be coincidence but definitely haven't felt it since.

Good luck!

So guys.. The moment of truth arrived...

All seemed well for about 15 miles and now it is shaking again :( but not as violent...

The engineer has said he replaced the DMF - Clutch kit - Aux belt and a tensioner. Looks like I am calling them again tomorrow to report the fault.

Something I have noticed however - The car has the odd shake at idle but if I leave it idle long enough I hear the engine "whistle" - the engine noise changes and then the shaking becomes worse..

I wish it would stop! :(

Sorry to hear that.

The bit you decribe above sounds like it is related to the EGR valve.

When the valve opens at idle you hear more of a whistle from the turbo.

Has the EGR been looked at? I very recently cleaned mine (about the same time as the clutch, DMF etc) so it may also be related to that?

How many miles are on the car?

They did say they thought it was the EGR but after checking they reported this as fine. The car as 37K on the clock. I will mention the EGR again when I go

Having had all those parts changed/checked, I'd now suspect the throttle setting. Mine had the "high-revving" at idle issue on occasion. I checked the throttle by lifting the pedal with my foot & it lowered the revs- adjusted it and it removed the issue...BUT it introduced a vibration similar to the issue described. The revs at idle were just slightly lower than recommended & it caused a slight vibration and shake through the steering wheel.

Another slight adjustment of the pedal & the vibration went away. There was only +/- 200 rpm in variance to create or remove the vibration.

There is also an adjustment you can make to slightly increase the idle speed.

Think I did it on mine as it used to idle ever so slightly too low.

Got a feeling it can only be done on certain PD's (the ASZ I think).

Phil

I have also heard of the timing needing changing and that solves it.

Think mine could be related to the EGR as when cleaning the other day I noticed no gasket :D

Yea my mates engine shakes at idle very bad and he has raised the idle using vcds and this has stopped it. Thing is his engine has 220k on the clock so i would expect it. My next question is if it is low idle why does it only do it when engine warm? After doing about 10 miles. Its going back again on tuesday so the engineer can again experience it.

When cold doesn't the engine give itself a but more revs or such until warm?

  • Author

Yes I think it does.

Will post updates when I get them next week.

Thanks for the constant feedback guys.

Apparent other faults seem it could be a dodgey injector.

Took the car back to the dealers again today for the engineer to witness the shaking. I was really shocked to be told this is normal and expected from a Diesel.

I have drove many Diesels before and not one shakes like this. Anyway we ended up going back to the Dealership and the engineer fired up another Diesel and no shaking. They currently have another Fabia VRS 06 plate for sale on the forecourt so he fired this up to test and this didn't shake either. We left it idling for a good 5 minutes.

It would appear they are now trying to tell me this shaking is normal but anyhow it is booked in on Friday to have the EGR Valve cleaned and another part cleaned (Cant remember the name)

I asked about the Injectors and were told they tested them and they were all reporting good readings.

What is also shocking is, whilst we were testing the other vRS for shaking he mentioned too me he really would like to spend the day fixing this and getting to the bottom of it but "as I am on extended warranty they just don't cover the time for a engineer to spend ages playing about with a car to find the problem".

What do you think I should do guys if on Friday after the cleaning of the parts it still shakes? Take it to another garage to have them tell me the shaking ISN'T normal - Have them diagnose the issue?

If the shaking is normal then they would be like that from new!

If the problem still isn't fixed after cleaning the EGR (was is the inlet manifold they are cleaning too?) then you need to push them further.

Perhaps the opinion of another garage would be good too.

Worth mentioning/checking is with yours, I pressume, being a BLT engine is has it had the hesitation fix? I believe this was a revised gasket with a smaller hole on the EGR.

Yes that was it, The Inlet Manifold.

I might just take it to DM Keith in Bradford and ask if it is normal :giggle:

When you say push it further I emailed Angus who wrote me a letter and directed me to the Principle of Huddersfield which got the flywheel, clutch, aux belt and tensioners replaced. When it started shaking again I called the Principle and he directed me to the service manager who had me come in today.

What I did notice, not sure if this has anything to do with it but the 06 vRS that is currently for sale was idling lower than mine and it was cold! My idle sits on the 1 on 10.
