Manual mode - DSG/override

Featured Replies

Is the dsg gearbox programmed to override gear changes when using the paddle shifters in semi manual mode (using the paddles whilst in D)?

Twice now when I've been overtaking and dropped from 6th to 4th with the paddles, its seemingly prevented me front changing back up until I got to 5000 rpm (from 3000, when I've tried to change at 4000) then been really slow to then shift to 7th with the paddles.

Is this normal?

I find the best way is to drop a couple of cogs with the left paddle and once you have put your foot down and started your move is to pull the right paddle and hold it, this puts it back in to "D" mode without having to wait for the box to change gear. I think when using the paddles the gear box holds onto the gears to long

Just my thoughts

Will give this a go, cheers!

Just to add:-

I'm thinking when using the paddles it may be in sports mode. Another exciting drive is to put the stick in Triptonic mode, -/+ then just use the paddles, you then have greater control as to which gear your in. If your doing this and forget to change gear when slowing down and coming to a stand the gear box will change gear for you, it thinks you have forgotten to change gear.

The box will also learn your driving style, always foot down the box will be more responsive. I have to take the wifes Vrs out now and then as the Box has become lazy

Until it puts itself back in D, then it won't change automatically (unless you hit 7000rpm..) but even in manual, it tries to think ahead which gear you want next (makes sense when you look at the workings of the DSG box) so highly possible that the other gear set is in the wrong gear which takes it upto a second at times. Flicking from, say 5th through to 7th again manually (or even back to D by holding the + for a second), it can take a second or two to sort itself back out.

Do you mean that after you have changed down then booted it the car won't change up even when you are clicking the 'up' paddle? If so then that doesn't sound quite right to me. In the mid-range rpm like that it should change up if you ask it to

Yep, thats what seems to be happening, its taken two pulls on the paddle to get it to change, by which time it's reved to 5000. Maybe i'm not just pulling the paddle hard enough for it to register it, but it sort of scared me breifly that it was going to keep going.

Could it also be becuase the oil wasn't yet up to temp (70ish)? Would this cause the gear box to change slower?

Or, it might just be me and the way I'm using the paddles expecting them to react instantly rather than giving the gear box time to prepare the next gear.

The times when it's happend it has been in the morning when it's still cool and my drive to work is quite short. When I'm going home and the oil temperature is higher, from what I remember it's responded instantly to the gear change.

I'll give it another go tomorrow and see if it's still doing it.

Could be mate, I know in the heat of the moment I sometimes expect an instant change an have to remind myself there is gonna be a delay!

Remember that you have 2 clutches, one for the Even gears and 1 for the Odd, if you try and go from 1 Odd to another - 5 to 7 - then the box has to disengage the clutch, select 7th and then re-engage the same clutch which will take a lot longer than simply flipping clutches when changing from 5 to 6th say, or any change from Even to Odd or Odd to even - which takes milliseconds and is rarely noticeable

Also the electronics expect you to go Up or Down 1 gear at a time so the box has already pre-selected the next gear it thinks you will need, it is therefore not ready to miss a gear and will take a little longer to do that. The only solution is to flip once3 wait a second and flip again to give the box electronics time to sort itself out..

the box has already pre-selected the next gear it thinks you will need,

This has always amazed me, your in fourth and it thinks the next gear you need is fifth so it pre selected that gear, you then change to third with the paddles but the gear is there in an instant.

Just been for a sunday morning blast, and did a bit of paddle work too. Gave the box a chance before selecting the next gear and it responded as it should.

I think it was just me before tbh, thinking about the next gear and trying to select quicker than the car could.

(or even back to D by holding the + for a second),

Just tried this...thanks for the tip! Quite impressed. No longer need to use the other (awkward) method of moving the selector from D to M then back again which the dealer told me.

Still getting used to this car and the finer points of DSG so thanks for all your replies, they are much appreciated!

When in sport mode the car is in automatic and won't change up a gear untill it's hit the redline, the best way to over take in any gear mode is to take your foot off the accelerator and then bury foot down on the accelerator and the car put will you in the best gear to over take other cars
