Speed Cameras...

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a road angel or any other kind of detector?

If so is it worth the actual cash?

I have been pretty good in the past at keeping my eyes open for cameras but there are so many mobile ones around now that I feel I am on borrowed time.

Not that I speed of course... :o

A GPS detector won't detect a mobile camera (assuming you mean a man in a van) and by the time a laser detector has alerted you to one, your NIP will be being posted ;) Garage door openers (aka laser jammers ;)) seem to work, but it is an offence to use one.

Garage door openers are not Illegal to use....Provided you have a automatic garage door and can prove it in court. You can purchase ones that are "on" all the time. When you approch your garage, the door will open no buttons to press The sensor fits in the grille of your motor.

A lot of the camera vans are parked up in regular spots which *are* on the GPS databases. Of course if they move down the road for the first time then you won't know about it until it's too late.

Aside from not speeding all that much I've avoided getting any kind of detector or GPS system as it seems to lull people into a false sense of security. "my detector isn't warning me about anything so I won't get caught". I prefer to just keep a good look out for vans and cameras.

I have an origin B2, gps, and laser detecter, and you can programme the gps with your own spots where you know the camera vans are..... worth it's weight in gold!!!!

I go with the keeping my eyes peeled and making sensible progress where suitable.

Howver I do now have a PDA with the GPS database of common sites.

I use the sound bite: danger will robinson from lost in space...

I jumped when he warned me the other day as I always thought that stretch of m-way was fairly open and clear...but yes there is a bridge a mile further on, which I guess has been used...so it's usefull for that I guess.

And night time in new places. Watching speed and not road in unfamiliar places scares the hell out of me, is it a 40 or a 30...or a 50, no wait it's a 40, hang on wheres that 20 sign come from, dam missed my turning, smack.

So for unfamiliar places they are handy as you can to a certain extent return your focus to the mire or road marking and signs not forgetting of course the other hazzards ;)

I do exactly the same, and use it if I'm going anywhere new - there's just so many of the beggars these days, and not always in places where the speed limit is obvious (the 30mph stretch of the A34 springs to mind...)

There is. Get your plates laminated, when the flashgoes off, the light reflects back.

Only problem with that is when faced with a device which doesn't use a flash!

Been done here by someone I know, still hasn't gotten caught.[/quote']

Tiff Needel did that. Firstly it didnt work as the flash comes in from an angle so it doesnt receive the reflection... and second the police look for distinguishuing marks on the car like dents or badges and then cross reference that with DVLA lists. They go out of their way to find you... There seems little you can do to get away from them...

I've bought one of these and they detect the laser and the mobile cameras mainly. They may go off randomly from time to time if your in an area with lots of activity becasue of radio frequencies and what not.

This baby saved me on the way to Bristol on the M4....i think...It's been over a week and havent had a letter through..yet... :(

Think of it this way...if it saves you once, it wuld have paid for itself and saves you 3 points. Think of it as insurance.

Hope this helps.

I have a Road Angel, and use it every morning on the drive into town. Yes I know where all the cameras are, but when your doing the same journey every day you do tend to drive on autopilot at times which can also include forgeting a camera. So for that, the beeping and flashing of the RA is perfect.

Plus, its also very good when travelling roads that are unknown to you.

They have cameras which dont flash there? Wow..they all flash here...the lamination works here though...

Im thinkin maybe if somebody would put in all the money to convert the plate support into a rotatable one with a diff plate in the hiding it would work...hahah

Got an origin b2 solo ...worth its weight in gold makes driving much more relaxing................Plus you can concentrate on the road.....not looking for cameras

I've got a Road Angel - it's also an officially supported product so Skoda hard-wired it for free - no nasty cables and a usable power supply.

As I do over 100 miles a day it has undoubtedly saved my license - no false alerts, accurate as hell and you can add your own 'danger zones'. It also warns (optionally) of schools, accident blackspots, lasers etc...

If you do any mileage at all on unknown roads, you need one these days, or losing your license is only a matter of time.

I have a GPS system and find that it is very useful especially as previosly suggested in the dark and in a strange place.

This is a made up story!!

Travelling along a road in scotland which is straight as far as the eye can see, the speed crept up a little to what would be described as take off speed, when a bleeping from the box saved one from a ticket and court appearance and fine and ban.

So i would say that

Forward facing Truvelo type cameras don't flash (at least visibly) - they wouldn't be allowed to since it would be distracting to the driver. http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/Truvelo.htm

The Road Angel 2 also only picks them up just in time - although I admit I've been travelling at the speed limit each time I've gone past the two sites I know of - that's both directions just south of Silverstone and just north of Basingstoke.

Try setting the distance on your road angel to 500m then DRJ....

Only problem with all detectors is that they dont pick up mobile cameras till they've actually fired a laser at you...or you might be lucky and catch one reflecting off of another car before they target you. But I had a RA2 and there great for fixed cameras but tbh your so busy looking out for mobile ones you see all the fixed ones, so I sold my RA2 and made a

I've now set it to 500m as you've suggested from 250m. However I'm already getting a lot of "false" readings - particularly with Schools - so may have to go back to 250m. However I've also discovered a Speed Sensitivity setting so I've turned that on too.

yeah I used to get the same can get quite annoying lol if you dont mind not having school alerts you can turn them off....

I know - TBH I don't know why I left them turned them on in the first place :)

Truvelos - at least those in Kent - do flash.

I actually complained about the distraction to the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership because they are a scourge when we set 'em off on emergency calls. They said they would consult their engineers but the cameras are still flashing. Great fun driving at speed with black spots in front of your eyes!
