Excessive Battery Drain

Recommended Posts

Interestingly. address 56 for the radio shows a fault, '01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded'.

This this doesn't seem to cause any problems other that the Bolero display being dim.

My Bolero is dim too. Reacts with the dash-dim control, but unreadable during the day. I was told it's a common problem.

However, the "incorrectly coded" bit I might be able to shed a little bit of light on. About 7 weeks ago Mike Holroyd had a poke around in my Octy with his VCDS. Am fairly sure I had the "incorrectly coded" error, despite the fact that it worked 100% fine. From what I recall there was a setting telling the Bolero what the rest of the sound system is. (8 speakers, 8 speakers + amp, etcetcetc). Mine was rather oddly set to nothing. Mike coded it to "Octavia with 8 speakers" and the error vanished. If you nudge Mike (gentley) he might be able to recall what and where the setting is within VCDS.

If anyone comes up with a solution to the dim display, I think there'd be some very grateful people around.

Thank you guys, you have given a glimmer of hope to many Bolero owners.

RainbowFire, can I ask you what Mike's username is so I can IM him to ask.

I will in the meantime investigate the 'long coding' as suggested by andyvee, to see if there are any obvious anomalies.

As soon as I have any results, I'll post them.

I seem to have taken this post a little off topic, is there a more appropriate thread I should be updating, such as..

£160 for a battery? What make and model is it??

Battery was £100 OEM, but the dealer decided to charge me £60 diagnostics check. Absolutely disgusted with the service I received, but didn't have any other option unfortunately.

It's mikeholroyd, he's posted within this thread so easy to find.

Top man, very knowledgable. :)

Thanks blackspaven

Andyvee was also kind enough to provide Mike's details, along with some further tips regarding the Bolero coding and the dim diaplay issue.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I've had the new battery fitted for around 2 weeks now and it still starts first time. I've got it booked in to a garage for a scan early in October. The reason I'm still getting it scanned is that the airbag light has now came on. This may have been down to me taking out fuses one by one and it may need reset.

But if anybody else needs to put a new battery in. When checking the amp draw you need to give it at least 15 minutes for everything to start up. I'm not sure how long though. Could be 16 minutes, could be 40 minutes. The best way to check without a garage. Leave the car for 3-4 days then fire it up. It it starts, then it'll be fine.

Will post here once I hear back from the garage.

Is there no-one near you with VCDS that could do the scan quicker (and probably cheaper too)?

Not really. We're on the Isle of Skye :) My dad is coming up hopefully end of October and he'll bring his Solus so I might wait until then if it's going to break the bank. I can live without airbags for a while as I'm only driving 30 miles per week at the moment.

  • 5 years later...

Hello,

Sorry to drag up an old post but I seem to be having a similar issue.

I've bought a 2010 Octavia VRS TDI. I got this for my wife to use on maternity as a safe, reliable car. (Didn't know much about the VRS model) So far its been sat on the drive or I've had to take it due to it being so unreliable.

Its just had a new Alternator as this was believed to be the problem. (Or could have been killed by recharging drained battery every day) Fed up of going back and forth to the garage. Bought private so can't go back to the seller.

Battery was tested ok but its now dead and is dead every morning. Just bought a new battery but don't want to kill another one.

Tested the Amp drain and its around 0.68, then drops to 0.39, sometimes comes back up. Unplug the Can Databus gateway fuse and it drops to 0.2. In hot weather its far worse and I'm sure I can here fans running behind the stereo even with ignition off? Occasionally I can hear a clicking from the rear drivers side wheel arch area, on investigation its a towing relay that's clicking? This also carries on with ignition off and the car locked ect.

So I'm guessing I need to get it code read? VCDS? And possibly the Can databus changed?

Question is can anyone help me near Sheffield? VCDS read or repair?

Got a 14week old so you can imagine time it tight and I'm struggling to get time to work on it. If its going to be a nightmare or expensive I'll have to "We buy any car" it and take the hit financially. Not a great place to be, any help would be appreciated

Hi Andy,

I'm going to see Waytootall off here tonight in Sheffield so hopefully that will shed some light.

Picked up a new battery from Euro car spares. There is a code on at the min for 33% off

@PhilVRS2010 - How did you do the current measurement?

CAN-bus cars such as the MK2 Octavia can be tricky to diagnose as simple actions like opening a door or leaving the bonnet open can cause system to wake up and invalidate your testing.

I've attached the suggested method from VAG.

Ah thank you.

I just disconnected the battery and used a multi-meter across the terminals. On a hot day I can here a humming from behind the stereo. Sounds like cooling fans to me. Ignition off and waited a while but keeps running till the car cools down. (at night)

I believe it to be the original stereo.

Its a Columbus - Front loader CD, MP3, Hard drive, satnav. Not sure of model number. Can get a pic if needed.

Phone doesn't work so I presume it doesn't have the Bluetooth kit installed.

Your Can Gateway is compatible with the Columbus, so changing it will probably not help your cause. The fact that you have a relay clicking is something which needs investigating, but you've omitted to post a full autoscan so no one can see anything other than the faults you've shown.

I've also noticed the fans in the stereo do turn off once its cooled down. I suspect because it needed a new alternator the battery was also knackered. Surprised they didn't fit a new bat at the same time as the alternator.
