Cleaning your Alloys

Featured Replies

I have noticed that after I have cleaned the wheels on my Furby there is a light brown-ish stain left behind.

Now I don't like using acid based wheel cleaner as the laquer peeled off my last set of alloys and it was blamed on the wheel cleaner I used when I looked in to getting them re done (I just sold the car instead!?).

So any suggestions how I can get rid of this stain, or any recommendations for non acid based wheel cleaners.

Cheers

Elbow Grease!! I sometimes get stuck with cleaning them (mum and dad say they can't get down that low!!) Theres some alloy cleaning stuff we use and we have a special brush to clean them with!!

Try Auotglym tar remover it worked on mine (or I have heard petrol works..but go careful)

Diesel is also very good... I've used it to get rid of rust stains!!!..as said go careful tho!!

Wonder Wheels! It's wonderful... :D

Could try panel wipe. I've used Upol S20 water-based degreaser, which is effective and neutral. After you've taken the stain off, you should consider applying Diamondbrite. The muck & grime just falls off my wheels now.

Thanks for the advice, can you get this stuff at Halfrauds?

Forget any wheel cleaning stuff.

Your wheels are not bare alloy, they are covered in paint and laquer just like the rest of the car.

You wouldn't use acid based products on your other paint so don't put it on the wheels.

Use a slightly abrasive polish like Autoglym Super Resin Polish, if that doesn't fetch it off use some colour restorer or T Cut first and then polish afterwards.

No. I found this stuff (U-POL System 20 Waterbased Antistatic Panel Wipe) on the net for about

what about MC2 or its other named product at a lot less money?

I will beat Josh to it!

Viro-sol. From >>>Here<<<

fourth product from bottom.

But 5 litres of it, mix it 10:1 water to Viro-sol and spray on your wheels. Leave for 10 minutes and wash off. It works a treat and cleans the engine too.

Agreed , Virosol is also sold as MC2 from elsewhere ......... , and is as stated excellent for wheels and the engine bay .....

That type of brush is quite scratchy, and I would be looking at a softer brush if I were you.

I used Autoglym super resin polish as recommended in this thread.

The wheels had some yellow stains and marking where the wheel cleaner i used almost every week had eaten the laquer slightly...which really annoys me...if i buy alloy wheel cleaner i don't expect it to destroy my alloy wheels arghhhh

Anyway, the yellow stains came off straight away and the parts i thought were pitted seemed to be restored as well :)

It was quite hard work though, only managed to do the front wheels, doing the back ones next weekend ;)

I coated them with autoglym alloy wheel seal as well, i dont want to have to do this again for a while!

The wheels are still in perfect condition after 7,000 miles - unlike a colleague's car of similar age ho's used "wonder wheels" and is suffering "corrosion" of the centre decals. Whereas the car's paintwork is very scratched from using a proper carwash brush. I'll stick with the kitchen sink brush for the wheels thanks!

where is a good place to get a wheel brush? the sort you get in wonder wheels-without having to buy wonder wheels that is ;)

If you don't want to use a cheap washing up brush like mine, Halfords do a proper wheel brush - conically shaped - but it was more expensive, somewhere between

You can also get a soft horse hair type brush from the AutoSmart Man, in two different sizes for about

will have a look on the net, thanks

Having praise dwonder wheels I now regret ever using it.

My wheels now collect brake dust faster than ever and it collects is what look like fine scratches all over the surface :(

DONT USE WONDER WHEELS.

How many times do we have to say it. ;)

Your wheels dont have an alloy finish, the finish is just paint.

You use anything which is massively abrasive like a hard brush or acid type cleaners and you will scratch the surface of the paint, remove any protection off and start to eat into the paint.

In time the wheels will start to collect dust more and more and eventually go yellow.

Treat the wheels as you would your bonnet and Polish them, you wouldn't use a stiff wheel brush and acid on your bonnet so why use them on the wheels?. Get a good layer of polish on the wheels then a weeks worth of brake dust will wash off using wash and wax and a sponge.

Re-polish the wheels every couple of months and your laughing.

Why dont you use an alloy wheel cleaner its so simple.

meguires HOT RIMS completly safe for any wheel painted, chrome, damaged, doesn't have xcesively strong acids but clean up great then apply Autoglym WHEEL SEAL for total protection.

If your wheels are not damaged and not chrome WONDER WHEELS is f***ing good, brush on (brush supplied) wait 5min wash off SIMPLE no hard scrubing it just cleans great (voted 5 years in a row Best product)

Remember to put a some type of seal on it to protect it so the next time you clean it just a case of wiping it

I'd say get one of these... it's better than a badger up a drain pipe

and whilst you're at it get a wiper and bag your chamois :thumbdwn:
