Another colour coded grille but a bit different (magic black on race blue)

Featured Replies

I was off on Paternity leave this last couple of weeks and to stop the kids driving me crazy, I decided to do a bit of experimentation on the car. My vision for my car is to go OEM+ in that everything looks like it could be factory.

I was planning to do Race Blue on Race Blue but I also have a Monte Fabia and love the magic Black grille.

Luckily I sourced this grille from JonnoVRs after melting the one from my car with a heat gun (don't ask, long story and I put it down to sleep depravation!)

The paint will be super smooth once fully cured and sanded with p1200 and rubbing compound.

What do you think?

  • Here's a link to a Scirocco R with a gloss black roof wrap. Looks amazing, on the race blue. http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/543734_352196871519810_397351515_n.jpg I don't quite know

  • I think that looks well smart, still happy with mine being race blue colour coded though. Any thoughts on the new badge on front I think the all chrome new one would set it off nicely.

  • Yeah, the last thing I need now is to rub through the clear coat

Looks good Ron, I like it. Good effort on the spraying, it's not an easy job! Pictures upside down though!

Cheers, I took my time. Sanded it for about an hour and then etch primed it. I then gave it a pretty thin coat of black so that the paint didn't have too mu weight (prevent sag).

Left it 24 hours and then did 3 coats of clear coat with an hour between each.

Give it a week or so and then I'll sand it back to a mirror finish.

The pics coming out upside down seems to be an Apple thing, I took the pics with my iPad and they are the night way up for me.

That looks like mine!!

Sorry, I already beat you to it. :)

Ignore the Comms equipment.

Glad I helped to talk you out of colour coding it race blue, this looks way better. Makes a nice change to see gloss black as opposed to matt too.

That looks awesome!! really liking octys! possible next car!

Yep, it was good to meet you. I also bout some 15mm spacers as they looked great on your car ;)

Haha, you're in Oz so doesn't count ;p did you also open you headlights and paint the reflectors?

Good stuff, hubcentric ones I hope? Does it close the gap between tyre and arch?

Of course it counts!!... :p

I also did the main body of the grille, too. Now the whole thing is shiny, and it looks tonnes better IMO.

I haven't opened up the unit and done the reflectors, although thats next on my list.

Well, after the mounting of the aux. driving light, and the roof wrap. :D

The women over the road thinks you are mad by the way :giggle:

Just hit it with rubbing compound only and some autoglym resin polish, has come up pretty damn smooth.

Perfect mate, now leave it lol!

Looks great mate, gives the black a bit of depth! :)

Looks good - that's what paternity leave should be all about.

And I think bluevrs2 beat you both to it on his Mk2

I agree Rob. I spent mine painting my extension last time.

Just a word of warning with the spacers. I've taken mine off my vRS hatch as they started rubbing the arch and had slightly altered the rear bumper fixing. These were 15mm hub centric

That's a pre face lift though. If we're opening it up I did my pre face lift grill surround in black in 2006, albeit it on a black vRS lol

Exactly, black on black, so not black on blue

I was being slightly facetious in response to your comparison of black on blue on a pre face lift.

Never had any bother with mine; how low is yours?
