VRS Power Steering Mystery

Featured Replies

This is a continuation of another post I created about my power steering nightmare. I've only had my fabia VRS for a few months but absolutely love it, however the power steering failed with no indication of any fault light.

The mechanic i took it to replaced the alternator that he suspected to be faulty as he could see the steering wasn't drawing the voltage it should, however this wasn't the problem and we were back to square one. He then replaced a wire near the alternator and cleaned the contacts which made the problem around 50% better however it is still quite hard to turn the wheel especially when on the go-slow.

I then bought a steering angle sensor and replaced it myself which did absolutely bugger all, I also checked the battery and that was fine.

I now think the only way to go is replacement of the pump ( if anybody knows any different ideas please let me know). However when parking up the other day the steering started to hiss (as power steering does in older cars) however i have never heard this in mien before and now strangely the power steering seems to be improving again (no perfect but definitely improving).

I would be really interesting to see if anybody had a suspected cause for this or whether anybody thinks that I may need to change the pump as the steering is still not right,

really look forward to anybodies feedback, cheers, Pete

when you say checked the battery did it have a load test? have you checked the fusible link is good and clean and tight?

I didn't, what we actually did was pass the current between two batteries, I let a mate who's more clued up than me do it to be fair, but do you think that's a good port of call? I assumed because everything else electrical in the car was fine then it probably wasn't the case! Although the mechanic did say he had a look at the battery!

I've had a look at the fusible contacts and looks like the mechanics already been there as he seems to have bridged one with a strip of metal to create the contact. Still scratching my head.
