Octy II: Multi-function steering wheel

Three questions:

1. What darned functions are on this wheel?

2. What on earth is maxi dot?

3. Is it worth

I am considering the multifunction wheel as well, please tell us what you can do with it and what does the multi-dot diplay in conjunction with it.

I can answer 1 of your questions - Maxi-dot.

This is the display between the Speedo & rev counter, this replaces the warning lights display, with a combination Trip & display.

If you checkout the Skoda uk website or the VW site you can see an example for the Octy 2 or New golf or passat.

Is it worth

Only having the Superb to act as a comparison, the multi function wheel has cruise set/cancel/adjust up and down, and on the off side stereo station change, and volume up and down..oh and a little wheel bitton illumination on/off switch when night driving.

As for maxi-dot, its a dot matrix display as Steve said smack in the middle of the dash display and gauges. It displays computer results form the on-board computer, and radio details such as station, volume level, cd number and track and such. It also display very polite messages as and when such as "Please refuel", or "Sevice due", or "Please refill washer fluid".

All very polite.

I love the s/wheel radio controls and maxi dot. Its so much easier to see whats doing.

Hi,

I have the multi function wheel; it comprises of 8 buttons as follows:

1 & 2: fast forward/back buttons used for manual tuning of radio; searching within a CD track

3: Stereo mute

4: Multifunction wheel button lights on/off (looks cool with the lights on at night!)

5 & 6: move forward/back between radio preset stations and CD tracks

7 & 8: increase/decrease stereo volume (can also be used to adjust levels in advanced stereo menus e.g. bass, treble etc)

Have to admit I had expected it to control the cruise control too, like on my old Superb, but unfortunately it doesn't (cc is on indicator stalk - still dead easy to use though).

Is it worth the extra? Well I use it as it means I controlling the stereo is less of a distraction if you do. Consider it a safety benefit first and a comfort benefit second.

Hope that helps! :o

Doesn't the MF wheel also come with Maxi-Dot and 'small leather pack'?

I ordered the MF wheel, maxidot and small leather pack as options on mine... A mix up by the dealers (or factory) means that in reality all I actually got was the leather stuff :(

"left" and "right". :D

"left" and "right". :D

Exactly, the steering wheels in all my cars are multi function:

Function1: Left

Function2: Right

Bonus Funtion A: Horn

An Airbag

Better yet, "surprise" function :D

From what I've read, this multifunction wheel is indeed useful, in conjunction with the maxi dot. Let's hope that it doesn't break up too early...

IMHO Maxi-Dot is such an improvement over the standard setup that it's worth the

(although I haven't seen that yet - have to run the tank down and get the refuel warning to test it :D ).

The one that says "please refuel"?

The one that says "please refuel"?

That'll be the one  - only on the Octy II the warning is supposed to be in a different colour (yellow), whereas on the Superb it's all the same colour. I expect it will be accompanied by the same sanctimonious beeping though.....

The yellow lights are 'Warnings' such as need to refuel soon, fill up washer liquid tank etc. Red lights are serious alarms that you should STOP and remedy if you can, eg you run out of engine oil!... :P

BTW, the multifunction wheel is certainly wort its salt. No fumbling around to increase/decrease volume or move on to the next radio station or CD track.

Incidentally, the cruise control is not considered part of the MF wheel, it is independent and operated through switches on the light indicator stalk.

Talking about indicatot stalk, I wonder why Skoda dont have it on the right hand side and they keep it on the left which is for the convenience of left-hand drive cars. If the steering wheel is moved to the right then all function should have been inverted. Damn annoing and awkward to use your left hand to change gears AND to indicate that you are turning. I'll give anything to have the 2 stalks on the steering column reversed...

I ahve maxi-dot on my MK1 Octy. I like it :D

Only cars i've ever seen with the indicators on the right stalk are japanese. Japan has RHD cars like us. UK indicators have always been on the left (morris minor had indicators on left stalk).

Anyway, you shouldn't still be using the indicators whilst steering or chaging gear, should all be done separately.

Totally agree; I was running a Passat and Corolla at the same time, the RH indicator stalk was so much easier to use.

Swore at the time I'd never buy another Euro car, but have since cooled down.

The MM is pretty unusual then... a lot of old British classics had RH indicator stalks - Tirumph Herald, Vitesse, Spitfire, 2000 and others to name a few.

Late on in the production of some of the above (Spitfire 1500 for example) when BL parts bin stalks appeared, the stalk changed to LH indicators.

Steering wheel controls are just very nice. The maxidot is easy to read & use too.

Definitely worth it imho, even though it isnt an option on the Furby :D

It is a Furby option. Bloody expensive, but you do get a free satnav with it.

Oops - yeah you're right - 2.5k extra was a tad too much though, 150 quid is worth considering it for though ;)

The SatNav isn't that great for the money plus the discs are incredibly expensive too :(

Yeh and why don't they swap the pedals round at the same time just to make things really interesting.

Just viewing to checkout the multi function opinions, but the LH or RH (or maybe should be nearside/offside) indicator stalk is a long standing niggle of mine.

I proved to myself at least, that the off side hand is the most natural to use.

When swicthing from car to car - LH to RH stalk - and driving in auto pilot,

I would frequently set off the wipers instead of indicators on the Passat.

On the Corolla, fitted with RH indicator control, I never made this mistake.

Now, driving exclusively with LH indicator stalk, no problem.

Also, why do designers of left hand drive continental vehicles choose to fit indicator control on their offside(LH), and the jap designers to their offside(RH)?

Maybe its a marmite thing.

I'm convinced about the merits of the multi function steering wheel though. :)

[i'] If the steering wheel is moved to the right then all function should have been inverted.

Including the pedals????????? That would be fun!
