Loss of Power & Black Smoke issues

Featured Replies

Afternoon peeps,

Travelling into work this morning, I pulled away from the traffic lights like normal (light gas pedal work) and when I changed into second gear, the car didn’t appear to have its normal power. I also saw a load of black smoke and get a noise like something mechanical is spinning. I can confirm it’s not the usual turbo whining noise though.

I now have a major loss of power. When I put my foot down on the gas pedal, the noise gets louder, I see lots of black smoke and the car struggles to pickup speed over 2000 rpm. The revs just bounce. I can change gears no problem all the way through to sixth and can happily travel slowly doing low revs (1000 rpm).

RAC followed me to the local garage, so I’m just waiting for them to tell me what’s wrong.

In the meantime, do you have any thoughts on what it could be? I’m thinking either turbo related or possible clutch/gearbox issues!

Cheers

Check the boost pipes.

All pipes and seals are in tact. It's something that I can't see!

It's been confirmed as the Turbo

Apparently the turbo is in pieces inside!!

So, do I buy a standard one and remove the remap or do I buy an uprated one?

I've seen these standard one's http://www.ebay.co.u...=item20c384d15e & http://www.ebay.co.u...=item5894f24903 Any initial thoughts?

bad luck.

If your buying new then id go GT1749vb from a pd150 and remap to match. Or go standard again. Might not be the maps fault.

Right, I've just bought a new one from Turbo Dynamics.

I've purchased a new standard Garrett PD130 for £627 inclusive of VAT and delivery. They advised my garage will need to loosen 6 bolts slightly on the compressor housing to get it on. Apart from that, I'm praying it's a good one!

They also said it would cope easily with my current remap from Awesome GTI - don't know how true that is!! If it means removing it, then I will do. I need the Fabs to last at least another 3 years before I think about changing.

I know people will say I should've bought a hybrid turbo, but I don't want to remap it again and secondly, I'm not after any more power than I've already got.

Anyway, I shall say thank you once again for your advice and comments
