Insurance - a warning

My renewal this year was less than anywhere else, and less than if I went to the same company as a new customer. Both by a significant margin. :|

Me too. One of the most important things to do, is to tell them that they cannot auto-renew. You're are then a customer to be won and you often find you get offered the best quote.

I had this once when I changed insurers and the old company took another years premium out, telling me they'd done it to save me time and hassle, cheeky buggers

£200 solicitor fee, required Years of study to get good grades, then 3 years of uni, then a solicitor or bar course, then 2 years training or 1 years pupilage.

Once you've done that you've got to find a company/chambers that will take you on.

When you do you can do all the work, but forget being paid most of what you earn (if you're a barrister) in the first 3-5 years.

Also don't forget that you pay £200 for a letter, but they've got the expertise to write the correct letter in the correct form that says everything the court needs.

That £200 will be including their business costs, VAT the lot and they won't see all of that £200.

To get started in Law, you're basically having to borrow a bucket load of cash for 10 years. It's not unreasonable to ask for some pay back on that.

Especially since you can be sued and your career over if you get it wrong.

Imagine if an insurance company was put out of business if they gave bad advice? No not happening is it?

Morning!

That's all great, but I still object to being charged £200 for a letter which stated along the lines of, 'we acknowledge the receipt of your correspondence and we will be in touch shortly' the letter was pp'd by a secretary, not a highly trained 'expert'. It doesn't take an expert, or £200 to write a letter like that. I think anyone would struggle to justify that.

Anyway, that's all off topic, I used that an an example as the insurance industry isn't the only industry which charges fees, reasonable or unreasonable.

Edited by SkyInsurance

Fine, but at the end of the day you've got the law society who would probably have found in your favour if you'd taken an issue with that charge for that letter (if correct).

You won't find an insurance body telling you that the fee's charged are unreasonable, only that some things are not unreasonable.

Mine was like this last year, but this year has risen by £100+, so will be doing the shop around.

What was this thread about again???

Badgers, or a cull of insurance salesmen or something. I forget :)

Last year when I bought the new vRS I had £60 back off the insurance when I changed from the Mk1 so £460 for a years cover. The renewal was £480 so only £20 but that's not the point. I've gained another years NCB, still have no convictions or points or mods but yet it's more. I only stuck with it because everywhere else wanted twice as much and I'd left it a bit late to keep looking.

Not paying for the PA to write the letter, nor paying for the complexity of the letter. Your paying for the professional standard created by a governing body to keep cowboys and DIY people away, i.e. reassurance that someone is doing their job properly (solicitor) and that he/she is accountable for. Much like corgi engineers, electricians, technicians, doctors, etc etc.

Thats why I struggle to understand/trust mechanics, because they don't have any regulatory governing body (to my knowledge) to follow. :bandit: Maybe mechanics are not classed as 'professionals' in that sense.. No idea.

Totally agree - Its expensive but its not easy becoming a solicitor. If your not happy paying the expensive fees then study to be a lawyer yourself and reap the rewards.

I used to get sick of Joiners moaning about how much the brickies got paid. I just kept telling them to become brickies then and stop moaning.

Intersesting point about mechanics though, never thought about that before. Would be definately better if they were regulated as i wouldnt mind paying a bit more for their work if they then were accountable for it. Less chance of being ripped off then as they would be struck off the register. Makes sense.

Just get back on the subject here...

I went to Skyinsurance.co.uk, the guys who advertise here and took part in the discussion.

The quote was Fabia 1.4vRS, not yet delivered and expected in 4-5weeks. I live in good postcode (B or C area can't remeber now) and have over 9 years of NCB no claims no convictions, married, much older than average population of this forums ;) - a perfect insurance customer in other words

Sky quoted £550 (they just called me and run through all the details again where Admiral was at £276 with all bells and whistles inc legal cover, personal injury cover etc. Strangely enough £276 was higher if done for mult car than for single car. One would expect to have a discount for insuring both cars from a household in the same company...

Anyhow,

I cannot understand how is that possible, I mean such a massive price difference ?!?

TESCO for exapmle wants circa £320 for Fabia vRS

Chap from Sky was not able to explain it to me over the phone. I went on their website as they were supposedly offering car club discount...

What I cannot understand is why there is such a massive difference?!?

No excuses for any company,

because if you just want cover and it is £100- £150 cheaper, its sometimes worth taking it, most people will.

Years of no claiming, 'its money saved'. "What is the worst that can happen?"

Making a claim with some Brokers & their underwriters can cost you lots of grief and it can soon be more than any saving you made in one year of £150 cheaper it can cost you serveral years worth of saving that you had..

Waiting for a vehicle to be Inspected & and Loss Adjuster to mess about, approve repairs, get repairs done, settle etc etc

Give these a try please and let us know how you get on.

Good point George, reputation in this business is paramount ! I've just finished reading customer experience reviews on moneysupermarket and they were dire - I think I will steer clear...

Liverpool Vicotria has top ratings for customer stisfaction and is only a smidgen more expensive - I will go away and get quotes now from both LV= and premiumchoice

Premiumchoice does not have Fabia vRS in their car choice drop down menu!!! Rather embarassing lol

I am puzzled by by some rewievs here https://www.moneysupermarket.com/motor/reviews/provider-reviews.aspx?providergroupingid=26&providername=diamond&addreview=&Page=2

some are brilliant some are STAY AWAY!!!!! type ... same goes for Diamond (looks like Admiral's daughter firm to me...)

http://www.which.co.uk/money/insurance/reviews-ns/car-insurance/whichrecommended-providers/ - they recommend "LV=" highly....

You are right George, saving £50 a year and then having a nightmare for months trying to get the insurance sorted is not really worth it!

Lord, I hate searching for and renewing car insurance, bl00dy mine field!

Please try speaking to someone at Premium Choice, there are different Departments.

Look at the thread in the 'Citigo Section' in this forum, on Skoda Insurance, & LV, some may well like them,

my friends in Liverpool that went to LV in 2007 when they rebranded loved them.

Great to deal with and good prices.

Then last year they would not cover their 4x4's when kept at Liverpool Postcodes.

They just forgot to tell them they took the Renewal Debit but provided no cover.

george

Done LV= and it comes to £334 with £100 personal accodent cover add on and the rest as previously. Not so much opf a premium for buying at one of the highest rated and ?which recommended insurer?

Will try calling PC later on, have to dash now!

Is this for standard or factory extras declared too? Most comparison and online sites make assumptions such as standard, no points or accidents and levy a high excess.

Always check the small print, as my insurance is due and initially you get a killer deal, that is until you find out how much they cut out such as higher glass cost, chips not free, NO LOAN CAR in event of a claim, exempt from business use etc etc. But all extras you can buy, which reduces savings.

Some insurers I've found won't cover factory extras, others make no difference but want to know, others bump the premium up. :(

I've insured with LV= for years, through the CSMA as we get a slightly different policy.

Yes I could get a slightly cheaper quote elsewhere, but everytime I have made a claim it has been dealt with almost immediately, always with no hassle, and by a UK based system. I'm quite happy paying slightly more to get good service.

Big standard car with nothing on it at all. I use comparison sites to get an idea and then go to particular insurers directly to make sure I have all the relevant options and covers ticked. Still prices are wild within the spectrum, same go for excess size, from like £350 to £850 lol. What also makes a massive difference is whether Quotes are for me or my wife and I though that was ruled illegal by EU supreme court recently? She gets 50-75 quid less premium than I do with almost the same driving and claims history. Best thing is that people are not aware that most insurers are just salesmen for one or two underwriters, RBS being the biggest .

Did you take the CSMA (Britannia) breakdown aswel?

Sounds like the UK insurance industry needs regulated. Does the ombudsman have teeth?

"Declare everything and let the insurance co decide". Hell No. All information should be provided on a need-to-know basis. If it's factory option then it isn't a modification.

Yes, at the full service.

Worked out it was cheaper going for the full works from Brit Resc than taking out EU cover twice a year.

Are you a member too?

You were given a full explanation of the UK insurance industry in the Yeti section earlier, which I thought you had accepted.
