Got my VRS back but no, more problems

Featured Replies

What questions??

The car been in a very poor state of repair does actually affect working on it. As every job that had been done on the car in the past had been bodged and I make every effort to make sure things are done properly. To avoid any issues with the engine that was supplied and the new parts we supplied. Every effort was made to put the car back together and have no issues.

As I had aready had a bad do with your old engine loosing oil pressure after 6 miles and killing a brand new turbo. So I was extra careful from this point on!!

And in this case there was no issues at all with any of the work I had done. It soley came down to the fact that the supplied engine was faulty! And when you asked me what you should do I told you to ring where it had come from and they said they would give you another engine but you would have to pay to get it fitted.

Your mum then rang me and asked what I was going to do about it and I said I thought it was un-fair that the engine supplier was not going to help you out and pay for the engine fitting, as its was there fault the work had to be done again. And in the end you have ended up paying twice to have the engine fitted through no fault of mine or your own!

  • The fact he didn't offer to take it back is ridiculous. He done the work and didn't leave it right. Then they are completely responsible. IMO

  • What a ****. Tbh I doubted his work as soon as he slated the map at the beginning of the thread. Adam

  • He needs to put that right. You can't spend nearly 3K on a duff job. If he doesn't do it, get Trading Standards involved. There are people waiting to receive calls from people like you. AND garages fe

Not wanting to stick a nose in but seeings as I've run out of popcorn ......... and chorlton never passed the fizzy drink over my way.......

Isn't the crux of this whether the fitting mechanic / garage would have (1) been expected to and (2) been able to, reasonably test the engine that was supplied and fitted in order to identify any problems with the supplied engine and advise on further work (and cost) that might be required, including possible courses of action?

So is that reasonably expected? And were they reasonably able to do so?

Any fault and subsequent liability with the supplied engine can't be down to the person employed to fit it can it? But would you want fitting to include reasonable and achievable testing and / or advice about the soundness of the supplied engine for things that might be spotted whilst fitting?

I fitted the engine, warmed it to full operating temp in the workshop after. Fitting the engine and then drove it about 5 miles. All seemed fine. As it did on the customers way home. I think it was ok for a couple of days as I saw him in traffic in leek over the weekend, and I did not get a text until sunday night.

I also advised that the supplied engine had rad weld in it and the therostat had been swapped as it was silconed in. And explain what reasons there might be for this.

Personally, IF I had a used engine fitted and it was faulty, i`d be spending my time and efforts going after the bloke who flogged it to me, not the bloke who fitted it.

The attitude and the not phoning is not ideal, but an apology has been made for that, I have seen first hand how time can fly in a busy garage when jobs dont all go smoothly. Having said that, and reading both sides of the argument, Mr Derv Doctor seems to have done his job/kept to his part of the bargain. The faults/failings of the engine were not caused by them/their work.

Just my thoughts having read the various replies.

Because I didn't get chance to go for a proper drive untill saturday night!

I'm not blaming derv doctor for the engine bein faulty. I'm blamin for acting a fool the whole time u had my car. When I rang up the first time u seems very caring and actually seems to how a toss. On arrival at your farm, you didn't introduce yourself or anything, I just thought u were a random farmer coming out for a nosey. Your customer service was awfull I've never seen anything like it! Every time I rang u u were arsey with me. U spoke me me like I didn't no ****eee from toothpaste. I spent two grand with u. I shouldnt feel like I'm moaning at you when I ring up to see progress

Ryan at Darkside has been nothing but good help and advice. He did me a goo price on refitting the new engine and also put few bits in and did other bits of work without charging me

Car now goes in first gear no problems because they fixed it, even tho your adamant it was actually a gearbox problem when it wasn't!

I think you need to aim your sights on the FAULTY engine supplied by DARKSIDE!

And you keep going on about them doing you a good deal at fitting another one?

It should be fitted for free!

I think you've made a bit of a **** of it tbh and made gav out to look like a numpty

In my experience garages rarely phone! I know of some **** hot mechs who dont call but just bash on and do the job right. I dont know what it is maybe they like to switch off after a days graft and just like concentrating on the job. They're mechanics not receptionists!

Also the car sounds like a bit of a dog anyways to be fair :o

You serious?

Obviously never delt with him?

He is a numpty

Hes apoligised for being down right rude and ****ty with me 90% of the time! So obv understands he is in the wrong!

I wouldnt mind if he was a **** hot garage who did just crack on with the work and get it done but he dordled like mad!

Like i said it seems more of a hobby to get some extra income rather than an actuall job as such

I spent thousands of pounds with him and the ONLY phone call i get is to discuss the bill at the end of it?

JOKE

Wow!!!... Glad you've finally sorted it.

Garages don't normally call me I usually chase it up myself if I felt the need, I'd prefer them to be more bothered about doing a good job than having great receptionist skills, unless there's an issue which may cost more or it's done I don't expect contact. How long had he not made contact for...Days/weeks months?

The gearbox 'issue' does seem strange :wonder:

Did Darkside give you a warranty with the engine? If not as said above you got it trade/cheap with no comeback?

The first rule of getting an engine replaced is (if you aren't fitting it) get the company who are fitting it to source it, that way they are providing warranty on the engine and the install. From the sounds of it you tried to do it on the cheap and got burnt.

What I think speaks volumes is rather than deal with it in a mature and reasonable way by approaching the engine supplier and asking them to inspect the block and if it's genuinely an engine fault remove/replace it at no cost to you you decided to vent spleen at the company who fitted it when all they seem to have actually got wrong is not calling you often enough. As far as the supplier of the engine i'm sure they are being very nice to you, i'd probably be nice to someone who could take me to small claims court for a few grand's worth of work.

There were plenty of parts he felt he had to fit without even asking/notifying me, which actually tolled up to quite a bit of money. Thats what really annoyed me. Buying parts and billing me for them without asking.

He had the car for maybe a month and i got ONE i repeat ONE phone call, and that was to discuss the bill

When i did ring up to see progress or rough eta when car should be done (he had told me a certain day so i rang up on that day and asked how things were going) and he was down right rude and cockey with me

He then blamed not test driving the car properly because there wasn't much fuel in it and 'my gearbox was ****ked' apparently 'Definitly the gearbox at fault' he said :S Even tho darkside spent 30 seconds on it and fixed it. 1st gear first time every time now

I did get a warrenty with the engine, thats why i did not have to pay for another one

On the cheap? Must be joking. DervDoctor told me to go and source and buy an engine. So thats exactly what i did.

ASZ or BLT he said, even tho i bought an ASZ and had to both buy more parts to make it fit, and wait another week!

Hummmm, I think different people expect different things.

Personally speaking, if I dropped a car to have a replacement engine, I`d discuss a rough time scale at the time. 4 weeks isnt the fastest engine swap, but its not massively longer than I`d expect tbh. Things dont always go to plan in a garage no matter how good the techie is, maybe he wasnt dordling, just had a few issues along the way? I would expect various consumables needing to be replaced along the way, and I would rather just be told when its done, I dont need running commentary on the fitting, just get on with it. The rudeness on the phone isnt needed, but as said, apology has been made and when your knee deep in engine parts with someone ringing every 30 seconds wanting to know when the car will be ready I can understand how it`d be easy to loose the plot. You didnt like the idea of parts that were needed to be fitted being bought, but were happy for him to fill your car with fuel & investigate your gearbox fault, billing you for it to test drive it for longer?

I`m not slating either side, but I dont think Derv man has done all that much wrong. I take it Darkside didnt charge you to swap the engines over if it was under warranty?

Glad your on the road again anyway!

We did discuss a rough time. He gave me a stupid estimate and said it would be done and ill be back on the road in a week tops.

He is a one man band and has to have a mate come in in his spare time to help him with the two man jobs!

I dropped the car off then drove past a few days later and the thing hadnt even moved

I expect to pay for parts like gaskets and seals and that but when it comes to fitting a new water pump without asking me when it didnt actually need one and all sorts of other stuff without notification aswell.

He even thinks its acceptable to have my intercooler sprayed black!? When i wanted it silver like it was

I wasnt ringing him every 30 seconds, just every few days. And the main reason why i was ringing him is because he had promised to ring me at such a time on such a day and failed to do so 100% of the time!

And as for the fuel and gearbox a tenner in my tank would of done to test it properly. £10 is nothing off a £2000 bill to make sure the car is working properly is it not? The gear linkage was clearly not right by eye. Darkside sorted it within 10 mins
