Engine run-in?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've never had a brand new engine before, i've done about 250miles on my car now, and i've been told it's very important to look after or "run-in" my new engine for the first so many miles or hours?, can any one shed any light on this?

And sorry if this is in the wrong place in the forum

Thanks in advance

Cheers guys, i've been following that onboard gear changer, i'll drive differently now for the next 600 or so miles :) hope no damage done :p

Yes that was pretty useful for me, I havn't really gone over 4.5k revs , i've just been plodding arround town in 30's doing 1st/2nd/3rd and then cruising in 4th which i think revs about 1.8k

so when I reach about 622 miles on the car then I need to be doing what, 30mph in 2nd gear? do you need to do this for every gear, because i'm not going to be doing any motorway driving for a bit I think, forgive me for sounding stupid haha

It's all about keeping the engine spinning freely and not labouring it, or over- revving. You really need to listen to it to develop an affinity with the mechanical sounds.

Of course, your problem might be you won't be able to hear your engine over that Tiesto super sound system!!

From what I read on the above posted link it's basically saying that after 622 miles you should let it rev out a bit to the maximum permissable engine speed. This to me means let the engine rev right out in the gears a bit right up to the top (without hitting the red line).

In other words... don't be afraid to give it a good thrashing! :)

Best advice ever.

yep, but NOT ALL the time

just the odd italian tune couple of times a tank should do it :)

I realise that you might not hear the engine, so for this early stage I would recommend gear changes for you at between 2000- 3500 rpm rather than mph. Occasionally opening it up to nearer the 4500rpm. After the 622 miles you can gradually open it up to maximum revs when you reach the 932 miles or thereabouts.

I have got to 722 miles and am really enjoying winding it out more, not quite to full throttle yet. Mind you, my mpg is now down to 54!!

You are quite correct, I don't really hear my engine AT ALL haha,

i've been changing gears about every 2k right now then moving down to 4th when i get to 30mph which does about 1.8k as I say, doesn't feel too labouring on the engine, it's quite hard to open up with the amount of traffic on the roads, I guess i'll just take it for a couple of motorway runs when it gets to around 622 miles and open it up to about 5.5k ish

Actually that might be a misinterpretation! Normal running in is a distance not exceeding - 'x1’, followed by another period of gradually increasing the revs until the vehicle has covered the manufacturers distance where they consider it is OK to use maximum revs and speed - 'x2’ So for the Citigo 'x1' is 622 miles and 'x2’ is 932 miles. (I have used 'x' as an explanation, the trade don't use it).

Between 622 and 932 you can go above 4500 revs, but you should not be at maximum until 932 miles. Also remember your mechanicals will continue to improve and might need anything up to 16000 miles before they are at their best.

If you use max revs at 931 miles does it invalidate your warranty?

Come on guys, get real, just drive normally.

How do you think your car was driven during its delivery mileage on a cold engine?

It's nothing to do with warranty - it's about you, the owner, getting the best out of your vehicle and allowing components to properly bed-in and possibly be more long lasting. Properly run-in cylinder bores will likely use less oil too.

As I understand it also, Skoda's cannot be driven over 20mph until PDI'd due to restrictions in the computer system.

Way back comparison tests were done on two identical vehicles - Fords I think. One was properly run-in and one was thrashed from day one. After the running-in mileage comparisons were made. The properly run-in vehicle was quieter and ran more smoothly. The thrashed vehicle was mechanically noisier. Performance was similar. There were more details, but its a long way back and I cannot recall all the comparisons.

I think we can take it that the mechanically noisier (thrashed) vehicle would likely not have lasted as long.

I make no point other than to draw owners attention to the Skoda manual. The decision on how to run-in the Citigo is then up to them!!

I am now at 800 miles and I use up 5,500rpm (but not with the peddle to the metal!), so I'm not dawdling either!

great info, i think im doing it right anyway, i havnt really gone over 4.5k at all im lucky if i hit 3k im so used to driving my vRS diesel haha

You will be the beneficiary in the long run by your care! Just keep the engine spinning freely and not labouring.

Exactly what i plan to do :) might plan a long journey for the 300 miles where need to rev it a bit more so i can get motorway miles in :)
