Egr cleaning

Featured Replies

That one above isn't that dirty.

This is why it needs to come off the car:

Now that is bad!

Bazmcc... yours wasn't too bad at all!

This was mine:

I cleaned it with a toothbrush and some petrol I had in the shed.

There are a number of results on Youtube for "vw egr cleaning", e.g.

"Loads of black smoke"

"think you got a boost leak mate !"

Sorry lads. Truth is, I didn't take any before pics. That dirty one is a different egr. Originally it was more like philje123's.

As for that one above. If your egr looks like that you'd be either hitting 400K miles or using diesel mixed with cat litter and all sorts of crap.

Thread revival!

I tried this today and failed!

Couldnt get the 2 bottom bolts out!!

My 1/4 rachet and spline set just could not fit!

Help!

Allen keys/ball ended Allen keys

Thought it was star bits? Still dont see that fitting!

Nope, on my BLT they were all Allen key bolts. It is fiddly but Is do-able.

If you have a BLT engine then it's easier to remove the ASV first to give more room for removing EGR to exhaust manifold bolts

Nah mines is a asz!

Try the ball ended Allen keys?

I did and still couldnt get them to fit! Looks like i will be paying someone to do it lol

I don't blame you. I couldn't do it myself after trying and snapping the one corner of the flange that attaches to the inlet manifold. Luckily my friend is an audi tech and done it for me as didnt want to damage anything else ha.

Exactly why i stop doing thigs when i get ****ed off lol

It is def a 10 mm allen key required to undo the two bolts on the bottom of the egr. Mine is ASZ. It is a mission to get enough clearance to loosen them but keep trying you will get there. Also I used a little gasket sealant when doing it all back up. If you have been using a tourqe key to try and undo them then you may have rounded them off, hope not.

Or new gasket and 2 o rings were only a few quid from sere motors. Being ASZ you probably only have 1 o ring?

Nah wont have rounded the. Was using the same torx bit as i was the top 2 so much smaller! MAY give it another bash at some point lol!

The 3 bolts on the EGR valve are either 5mm allen keys or 10mm bolts.. bottom 2 for the egr pipe are 6mm allen keys ;)

U have to remove the 6mm allen keys (using a standard short a L shaped allen key) before u can get ur extended ball ended 5mm allen key/ 10mm bolt on the bottom of the 3 5mm allen keys on the EGR valve..

Ur best leaving the top (easy to get to) 5mm allen key/ 10mm bolt in till last so it holds the EGR valve steady while u take the "fidley" bolts out ;)
