Aftermarket stereo keeps losing stations/memory

Featured Replies

Hi, I 'think' this maybe a harness problem i read on here???

Do i have modify something? I have just fitted a JVC stereo and used the existing harness that was connected to the stock radio?

Cheers

Just swap the two 12v power feeds around and it will be fine. (VAG cars are wired the opposite way round)

Sorry mate can you elaborate please?

e.g car harness or JVC stereo harness, sorry for being a numptie.

Pop the radio out and you will see that the JVC harness should have two in-line fuse holders, one is the permanent 12v (for the memory) and an ignition fed 12v, currently they are the wrong way round so you need to swap them around.

The wires are normally red & yellow. They normally have connectors in the stereo loom meaning you can just pull them apart and plug them into each other instead

Ok two in-line fuses got that obviously one wire into the fuse and one wire out x 2, but dont understand what you mean about swapping them about you mean the fuses or wires or what?

thanks

If you swap the power feeds around, what might you want to do? Please try and think more before you post

Come on mate give me some credit i obviously dont mean mixing and + and - feeds, all im asking is which wire from the radio harness goes to what fuse (of the 2), its just a case of swapping them about as they come from the radio harness.

I should really not be lazy and go out in the dark and yank the radio out.

At the moment you should have two cables, red and yellow and each will have a fuse in that looks like this.

RED <FUSE> RED

YELLOW <FUSE> YELLOW

change the configuration to look like this.

RED < FUSE > YELLOW

YELLOW <FUSE> RED.

you can do this by opening each fuse holder, and then plugging them back together the other way round.

My apologies for being lazy and making a meal out of it :D

Hmmm. I get this in my Fabia too but when I switched the cables I found that the battery was draining and car wouldn't start after leaving over night.

Also, I've got really bad signal where I used to get signal with standard stereo and I know dot a fact that its not the aerial cable not being plugged in :-/

Bad signal is you need a inline aerial booster as aftermarket stereos don't have it built in. Seems unusual your getting battery drain. What make of hu is it?

Well, I did buy a signal booster but couldnt find out where to connect the attached blue cable to then gave up!

It is a Philips CEM 2000 non DAB version.

I could never figure out the battery drain myself, thats why I set the cbles back to original. Unless of course I did it wrong somehow. If I rememner correctly, the instructions for swapping the cables werent much cop

It's red to yellow yellow to red. Blue wire goes to the blue remote wire coming out of rear of hu

Cheers for that Brian.

Done that now, just wait and see if it causes battery drain this time or whether it was just coincidence last time.

I do, however, still not have a very good signal. its better but not the greatest.

I have the same hu in my mongdeo but its the dab version and I have no problems with signal in the same areas with that when its on FM tuner with the same stations.

Anyway, thanks so far. Helped a lot.

You area till using a std rubber type aerial? As changing to the metal style bot racer aerials can affect signal

There is usually some missive in the install instructions for the h/u/ concerning VAG cars... and some others.

For example, page two of this...

Sorry to bring this back up. I knew about the wires being opposite and mine is wired up right. Problem i have is if the ignition is on and therefor the stereo, when i turn key to start engine stereo resets. Ive had multimeter on the supply and for a fraction of a second power drops below 12v. Is there a seperate loom from battery i can put capacitor on or would it be easier to splice the adapter loom with a capacitor?

I've not known of that happening before unless you've possibly either got a weak battery or both wires going to the ignition feed

Yep its got me puzzled battery fairly new ill keep looking :-s

Hi Guys after reading this and having the battery drain problem myself with the wifes car when i changed head unit, i thought i would give you all some advice, the Blue wire coming out of the head unit needs to be cut or the head unit will carry on draining the battery, i think its something to do with the convenience ECU trying to communicate with the original skoda headunit which is not there anymore, i did a drain test, with the blue wire attached it was draining at about 0.5 Amps with the blue cable cut it was back to a normal 0.1 Amp.
