Repeated Alloy Wheel Damage - Frustrated! Time for some Steel Wheels & Winter Tyres!

Featured Replies

Ok, enough is enough. Mrs Dunc is using the vRS most days now to take the kids to school & then go in to work. Painful as it is, c'est la vie for now!

She badly damaged the FNS alloy three weeks ago. I got it repaired, and she did the same wheel again within a week. I can hear you sighing as you read this!!

I left it as it wasn't too bad and I wasn't prepared to pay another £80 for her to just do it again!

Now she has MULLERED the FOS alloy today on the way home from work. Drove into a kerb. Three huge chunks out of the wheel right through the surface - several mm deep. She says she was crawling in traffic. The wheels are behaving like they are made out of cheese rather than alloy!

Anyway, I've had enough! I know you guys & girls know how I feel. Mrs Dunc doesn't really understand!!

I think the way forward is to take the alloys off her (Mrs D) completely and furnish the Octy with a nice set of cheap steel wheels with winter tyres.

We have just moved & live on a steep hill, so with winter nearly upon us, it makes sense all round!

So, my question guys is - where is the best place to buy the new steelies & what do I need to make sure of so that they fit??

Thanks guys! I'm hoping your love & support will cheer me up! I need it!

I got a set off here, albeit alloys, which had all season tyres on. I ran them for a month or two until the weather got wintery and then had my winter tyres fitted locally. You just need to check the PDC is correct.

The problem with 16" steels is they look rubbish.

It seems a shame to tarnish the looks of the vRS for half the year just to save the alloys but then I guess it won't matter as you aren't driving it.

As has been mentioned you should be able to pick up a set of 16" VAG alloys for the same or less money than steelies. Whilst these look slightly better than black steels / plastic wheel trims they still look odd.

Winter tyres are available in 18" but choice is severely limited and they are expensive.

One of my main purchasing requirements for tyres is rim protectors, these offer good in-built protection from all but the most severe kerb mountings!

Never mind the wheels what about the tracking?

I have never met a woman yet who is considerate about a car

The ones I have met treat them with contempt and then wonder why the bills are so high!

My ex caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to my G60 Golf!

There is a clue in that last sentence lol!

Too right. The 18“ tyres I put on my Zeniths last time for £100 each are now about £180, so I was pleased to find an orphan which someone supplied for £125. Trouble is it won't fit in the spare wheel well. Makes for a nice air freshener though as I love the smell of new tyres....

Hi all. Thanks for the replies so far! Don't even start me off on the tracking!!

Would these fit, considering the vRS brakes etc? How is this price wise in your opinion?

Any advice much appreciated! Cheers!

Can't get that link Dunc. Would the steel wheels from a 1.9 fit your VRs, because the narrow profile would mean good traction in the Winter and the tyres would be much cheaper.

I also feel your pain for the way your poor car is treated, and think that it may be typical female behaviour. Our Octy is due back next week after her prang a month ago, I just hope that she can be more careful in future.

I feel your pain and if it's any consolation I've been through the same thing, my mrs has damaged my alloys in the past but then so have I!

Anyway, you may be lucky and get a set of steels from eBay or even from this forum but if not then I got mine (now sold) from mytyres, they do a package and depending on the make of tyres can be had from about £400.

I'd NEVER let a woman drive my car and I NEVER let my wife drive my car - (unless I'm drunk hic)

They just don't understand. No mechanical sympathy you see. I've witnessed our neighbours parking near our house (and my car - yikes) and the curb offers no resistance to their manoeuvrings at all. It's just a minor inconvenience that requires more revs/and or speed to over-come.

Gents (sorry ladies!), I appreciate your sympathetic comments. Really helps to know I'm not alone.

Anyway, positive news. Local dealer wanted £634.56 for 4 16" tyres fitted with Uniroyal winter tyres.

I went back to the eBay link I posted earlier and spoke to Daniel in the Parts Dept at Rainsworth Skoda. Very helpful man!

I have bought four black 16" Skoda steel wheels with Hankook winter tyres balanced and fitted, all for £460 !! Will be delivered for free within 7-10 days. Result!

I can then take off the alloys, clean them up and have the two damaged ones repaired when I can afford it. My expensive Dunlop Sport Maxx RTs (very good BTW) can have a break and will therefore last much longer too - happy days!

When I think that the four Dunlops were over £500 fitted, the £460 for wheels and tyres to cover the next four or five months (and the winters after that) seems a bargain! New tyres might help us get the kids to school when the weather turns nasty too! We're on a steep hill which was effectively a shallow, fast flowing river last Monday with all the rain!

Thanks again for the advice and support gents.

Hi

I got a set of 16" steel VW Transporter T5 wheels off ebay for £130 delivered. Fit VRS perfectly. Also got Continental WinterContact 205x55x16 tyres supplied and fitted for just under £61 each from my local KwikFit onto the loose wheels.

Well worth the outlay for the peace of mind.

Cheers

Fine work Dave. My Hankooks work out at £65 each so you did very well on the Contis.

Happy to pay the extra £70 for the wheels, just to be sure that they fit! Pretty pleased all round.

If anyone is still looking for winter wheels I have a set of Octavia II 17 zeniths on eBay at moment. They are at £300 and don't think they will go much higher, they come with 4 tyres with between 4-8 mm tread

I've just emailed the parts department at Rainworth Skoda to see what kind of deal they could do on a set of OEM steels and Winter tyres for my Octy.

I've got a price from Mytyres for Conti tyres on steel rims - but would prefer OEM steels if they can get close to the price.

You're absolutely right about all of us of course, which is why our insurance is so much more expensive than yours. Oh, hang on a minute... :giggle: :giggle: :giggle::kiss:

I think you will find I said

Not saying that they do not exist lol

Not a bad idea. I was certainly impressed with the service & price this morning!

Good luck! Hope you can get the price even lower!

Get her advanced driving lessons.

Women are poor drivers when it come's to judging distances " Fact" if my other half damaged my alloy wheel's I'd make her pay for the repair

My local Skoda dealer quoted me £600 for a set of winter wheels and tyres... Dont think so! Mytyres were around the £400 for Nankangs

I got a brand new set of official Audi (abitos) BBS alloys last year with hankook mud&snow rubber on them after a discount for £453 all in.

info on this card was correct for my VRS

Didn't use them in anger until my epic fail of a wheel refurb this summer, once on the car I actually liked them alright but couldn't get a Skoda centre cap so left Audi ones on.......... that bit did kill me a little.

Great deal Fubar!

Personally I'd prefer not to have alloys to replace my alloys. Look at my first post on this thread.

With steelies, I won't be worried about Mrs Dunc's parking abilities!

The increased profile of tyres would help but these alloys after price the tyres were in same place cost £8.90 each so even cheaper than steelies for me was a very lucky deal at time!
