what's the fundamental difference?

Featured Replies

I'm researching/planning a td conversion for my truck using bits from a vw/seat etc td engine. Now there are many variants of this (1z) engine depending on wht it was fitted to. There are several power outputs quoted too: 75, 90,110bhp etc Could somebody explain the fundamental difference between the engies? ie What gives the various power hikes? Is it different turbos? Engine map? Or summink else? For example, if I were to remove the turbo bits from a 110bhp passat and bolt them to my diesel pick up engine, would I get a 110bhp gearbox breaker of an engine?

The 1Z (also AHU(same block)) engine you refer to was the 89bhp direct injection.

The AAZ was the indirect injection 75bhp, as I understand fundementally identical to the AEF block as in the Polo/Felicia etc.

The other 110bhp engine was the AFN direct injection. The AFN will mutilate the AEF gearbox, the 1Z/AHU will just about cope and therefore, I'd have thought the AAZ would suit OK. The 085 transmission on the AEF will mate OK.

Also, the injector pump on the AAZ was Bosch rather than Lucas as on the AEF, a superior unit I understand.

Both the 1Z/AHU and AFN had ECUs had mechanical pumps.

I think also that the turbo/manifold needs some work to ensure that you can actually close the bonnet due to the orientation of the Felicia's block.

Sorry all I could give you is fragmented info from loads of different sources I've read on the net, as I'm interested in doing a turbo conversion myself, so I'd be intrigued if you could keep us all posted :D

Will do. I need to keep doing my homework on this as i've only really done engine fettling with carbed petrol engines 18 years or so ago. My knowledge off all things ecu and direct injection etc are not a great as my enthusiasm! Much as i want a screamer, I may well start modest with an AAZ spec. So currently on my shopping list are: turbo & manifolds, oil filter assembly (with supply for the turbo) and a bosch injector pump (a straight swap? or will the standard one do for starters?) And a big hole saw for the bonnet!

you will need an aaz pump with lda or the turbo will be more or less pointless.

it will need to sit on a compatible bracket---some later aaz pumps use the same as the skoda, earlier ones with adjusting holes will need a contemporary bracket. If you need one got a couple.
