Tyre pressures and TP monitor

Featured Replies

Hi all!

Starting to get back 'into' my car, and what better way than to check the tyre pressures!!

The back were around the 25 psi mark, the front around the 15 psi mark. Scary.

In my defence I thought that the tyre pressure monitor would have highlighted this, and that grubbing around in the dark would be a thing of the past. Makes me wonder exactly what monitor is for, as I'm pretty certain I would be able to detect a flat.

I have the car booked in on Wednesday to have wheels renovated and recoloured and to have 4 new tyres. Have chosen Khumo, as they seem to tick all the boxes for me. From now on doing a weekly check of tyres and pressures will be a certainty!!

If anyone interested I can provide before and after piccys, after Wednesday!!

When were they last checked?

Tpm, when reset after checking, seems to detect most pressure drops, but not gradual drops over a long period. Not sure the max period of detection for the 3psi drop to trigger a warning.

Generally I find that the TPM only kicks in when one tyre is very low 20s and all the others are correctly set at low 30s. All in all it's not terribly sophisticated compared to some offerings......

Gadgetman, I would like to think that they were checked when car was last serviced in July, but I suspect not!!

No worries, as I said before I will make it a weekly check from now on!!

JULY!?

It's October tomorrow!

The TPM picked up a puncture on my car a couple of weeks ago that I didnt notice. Took a road trip a few weeks ago, hammering along the M5 it bleeped, pulled in next services and checked air, front offside slightly lower than the rest, reset the TPm, wasnt overly bothered about it as tyre pressure can occasionally go out of sync for one reason or another, carried on the road trip, got home 300 miles later, few days later the TPM pings again, go to the garage to check pressure again, again front offside had dropped considerably more this time, so came home and checked around the tyre found a screw in it, so popped to local tyre place £10 later all sorted, so it has certainly saved me from getting to a stage on a road trip where the tyre had totally deflated or ripped itself of the rim, so in my view its a great tool for 'helping' to foresee any tyre problems, obviously it doesnt replace common sense and regular visual tyre checks and air pressure checks, but in my instance it certianly made me check things sooner than I would of normally, so solved a problem from getting a lot worse! So overall, it gets a thumbs up from me.

First thing I do after a service (especially at a dealers) is check the tyre pressures - mainly because many places set the to the manufacturers' recommended 28(!) psi.

Just checked - 29 apparently (before anyone pulls me up on it) . Still seems very low though

Is there a reason you wouldn't use manufacturers recommended settings, ?. I would always, 2.2 bar on rear (32psi), 2.1 bar on front (30psi). Have to say though, monitoring kicked in when I changed backs to fronts and fronts to backs, when I forgot to reset it, but when 1 tyre went down too 1.7 bar(25psi) not a peep out of it, so not sure how low it goes before it triggers. tyres checked twice monthly along with oil, screen wash

My to monitor pinged on Sunday passed. Checked the Tyre pressures and the rear offside was down by 2 paid.

Apologises for my last message. Done on my mobile phone and it predicted some words wrong lol. Should have been tp and psi.

It doesn't actually monitor tyre pressure at all. It looks at the rolling radius and compares this to the other wheels. If one falls (the wheel turns faster than the other three, as detected by the wheel speed sensor) then the system notifies you.

If two fall on the same axle then it won't notify you (imagine putting a big heavy load in the boot). All four going flat over a long period of time will also not activate the system as the comparative wheel speeds will remain fairly equal.

Theoretically, the higher the speed then the lower the pressure drop to activate the system but I don't know what parameters Skoda program in.

I have 32 all round. When I have had it at skodas settings it just hasn't felt right.

I use 32 all round too.

Nice look, I think!!

Running at 32 psi all round, and will now be checking at least once a week!!

Hmm. I'll try attaching that picture again, on my laptop rather than my mobile!!

I always wondered how it worked. Thanks for that. I could never work out how they had a sensor in the tyres that could connect to the electrics of the car. Doh. Thats why i work in construction.

MrAwol, that is just so spooky.

I have had the same pang every morning for the last 2 years. I put it down to an age thing, but are you suggesting that it could be something else?
