keeping stock size tyres for wider wheels?

Featured Replies

Hi guys..

Looking at getting some different alloys for the car!

Want to keep to 16" but i have got 4 new 205/45/16 tyres and the new alloys are 7" wide instead of the stock 6.5" wide.

Would the stock size tyres fit but just with a bit of stretch?

Cheers lads ;)

(edit - seems posting a table is too difficult in this instance... So:)

Rim width 6.5; min 185, ideal 195-205, max 215

Rim width 7; min 195, ideal 205-215, max 225

So you'll be fine =)

Top man! Made my decision for me!

I've got 205s on a 7.5 up front and its fine. .

My rears a bit more mentalist a 195 on a 8.5j . . And still never had any trouble

a 205 on a 7j rim . . You won't even be able to see the stretch,it'll be fine,i think wheels look crap when the tires bulge over the rim too much anyway.

In my personal opinion, I think stretched tyres look arse. I know some peeps love it, but I think it looks awful, and is potentially dangerous. But if it floats your boat, fair play to ya.. I wouldn't do it ever though.

If i've got 205/40/17's would it make a worth while difference (handling, or anything else) putting 195/40/17's when I change tyres next?

Rolling radius will change, so could potentially throw speedo out a little (use http://www.etyres.co.uk/tyre-size-calculator.htm).

It'll handle better in wet & snow, but other than that, as you're retaining the same profile size, there will be less rubber between you & road, so may feel a little 'crashy'. Try it & find out innit =) I went up a profile on mine, (to 205,50,16) and it made the world of difference to the feel of the car.

Checked the calc, 1.34% difference, so in the realms of no bother at all.

my mate has 195 on 9.5j mk2 golf

Thanks, that will come in handy mate

50mm too narrow for the wheel. I wonder if he has declared this to the insurers? Having worked in underwriting previously, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot barge pole.

But stretch is cool! :dull:

So are drift charms. Allegedly.

Allegedly being the operative word ;)

I clearly don't get cool it seems.

Fridges are cool, right?

They are, so is our broken central heating. Therefore, as our house is cool everything I own is cool too by association! So really, I do get it!

You're too cool Trigger B)
