TFSI VRS common problems ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been happily plodding along in my pd vrs since i got it new in 2007. From owning the car for this amount of time and being a member on here i know most of what i need to about the car. I have gone through the usual issues that the octy is known for like failed injectors, abs unit, rear tyre wear blah blah. Its still a fantastic car.

My wife however has a Zafira cdti SRI, this car is just terrible (i am sure i don't need to explain why!). Therefore i am going to get her a TFSI VRS on an 06 - 07 plate as you just can't fault the octavia as value for money especially as they are getting cheaper used (i would also like to borrow it from time to time!).

I just wondered if anyone could point out any common TFSI related niggles that i need to look for. Like the PD has dpf, dmf and injector issues, does the petrol version come with its own list of faults to beware off/keep a look out for?

Thanks in advance.

Carbon deposits on the intake valves is the main one specific to the TFSi.. It's common enough to be a 'lknown' issue but not so common that it is guaranteed that you will get it - my local (small) dealer had seen two - me and someone else. The repair can be over £2k although my local Indy say he has done quite a few in the VAG range and would have been able to do it for closer to £1500. As it was Skoda chipped in £700 but that really was as far as they would go.

Just to add - mine occurred at about 40k. Apparently the previous owner (10k in 18 months) was a very 'sedate' driver and it is thought this might have contributed. A good thrash once a month is recommended to burn off what you can!

Split diverter valve, most common on remapped tfsi vRS

fuel pump cam follower, not a major issue but can be devestating if they wear through

I think somtimes you can frighten yourself to death reading these forums. I have been running a 06 TSFI estate with 45K on the clock for 18months without a hitch. Starts first time and runs like a dream. I originally looked at the Deisel version but so glad i didn't with all the problems the PD engine has. My advice would be to take your time and have a good look around, there are still good ones out there.

07 TFSI on 63k owned since new.

Problems so far

1) intermittent cruise control failure due to a gunky switch, fixed with a £3 bottle of contact cleaner and a cotton bud.

2) Seat bolster getting a bit worn due to fat arse

That's it.

I've just cursed myself by saying that now. It's probably in flames as I type.

Ouch!

Reading these messages makes me wonder if I should junk my Octyt!

It's old, (May '07), it's not done enough miles, (only 37K 'cos I don't use it every day, other cars to play with!), it's been remapped (257 bhp), never been over 120 mph in my hands & it only averages 35.8 mpg!

Perhaps I'd better find a new owner for it soon, or trade it in for something more reliable...............

As for problems so far, maybe the parking sensors are a little too sensitive..........

Happy mutterings to you all, Old Newbie, (AKA David C.)

If you like it David thats all that matters.

I do like & enjoy it but the ride is a little too harsh for my tastes.

I'm wondering if I should offer it to "bestyuk", maybe he would enjoy it more than I do?

I'm probably not going to buy a FL (current shape) Octy after all, so I either wait until Octavia 3 is on sale & trade the old car in, or sell it now, go back to the Ford for a year perhaps & rethink the situation then....

David C

Yeh i'm gettin bored of the harsh bouncy ride even worse since i changed suspension lol.

What suspension did you go for?

Problems: owned 2.5 years. Now on 112k, 06tfsi.

****e glass that scratches too easily but you will already know about that.

Slight rust patch on sill cover drivers side.

Cracked manifold.

Other than that I cant really complain, for less than 6.5k I got a 4 year old 1 owner car that could do 150mph and an easy 40mpg on a long run that seats 4 with lots of room and a massive boot with loads of equipment. I reckon I could still get 3.5-4k for it now which if you were buying it I would say that's a bloody bargain and will give you years of fun still.

You can look on any forum of any car and get blogs and blogs of 'common problems' with cars. Most of the stuff I have heard on this thread is general wear and tear, some perhaps a bit premature but then not knowing the history of the car , how the car is used daily, how it is treated/driven then I can't comment or really pay much attention.

I have owed 14 cars in my driving career, some have been absolute beauty's and most have had their problems. The worst car I have owned was my Audi TT 225 Quattro. Loads of things went wrong with it and Audi charge a fortune. I soon got rid. I've owned Peugeots from brand new and they've been back in the garage within the first few days, one was a 307 with an alternator failure the other a 206 with a repeated camber alignment problem. Owned a few Seats which all had minor issues here and there mainly electronics including a brand new Leon 2 FR 2.0 PD TDI and a 2006 Ibiza TDI Cupra with a blown MAP Sensor pipe having only covered 18k. I owned a Ford Focus ST170 for 6 months that was in with Ford twice with faults, one being the regulator cable snapping off the plenum manifold !! And it had various other suspension faults they couldn't diagnose!!! I had a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXI which after a week the nut holding the fan dropped off......on a boiling hit day and the camber adjustments were out all the time. My VW Bora 1.9 TDI 150 had its original turbo fail at 45k luckily that was under warranty when I saw the price! My Freelander was just utter **** despite only covering 35k it had all sorts go wrong with it costing me thousands! A Clio with various starting issues, sensor problems, coil pack failures, electronic faults, suspension problems and the car had only covered 60k. I had a 74k miles M reg Rover 214 SLi in 2001....there is no room in the box for the amount if problems that had!! I think the only truly reliable car I owned was my trusty P-Reg VW Polo 1.6 CL that was like a tank!!!

My TFSI VRS has the common slight hesitation when starting. I've had a new air con condenser replaced at the cost of £345 by a mobile air con fitter.....ignition coil packs replaced under recall last year covered by Skoda....and that is it...it has been regularly serviced, I give it stick sometimes (as designed) but can also treat it nice as well. Previous owner used it to commute between Chester and Widnes everyday so most of the miles are A road miles. I have either been extremely lucky or its all waiting to fall apart!! We shall see!

VRS TFSi 2006 64k Red FSSH recently had Major....running sweet for now ;)

VRS109, tell me what you're going to buy next so I can avoid it :giggle:

Blimey i haven't checked this post for a couple of days and there sure is some helpful info. I think i would pay the premium and get one from a dealer just to get their 12 month used warranty as backup. Although i do have a warranty direct policy on my car and they are actually quite reasonable. paid for my abs fix no issues the other month.

As i said, i have had a few of the more well known faults occur on my pd vrs but over the course of 80k its been more than fantastic. I didn't know there were as many common/well known issue on the petrol version to be fair.

I am going to have a chat with the mrs and hopefully make a decision on what we are going to do. I am half tempted to let her have my octy and order up a new blackline as they look very well priced. My next move is also to see if there are any left to order. 500 won't last long with that spec i wouldn't have thought.

Cheers guys, this page will serve as a helpful resource to many people in my situation.

Blackline is a bloody good deal if you can go for it.

Just popped into dealers at lunchtime. Does seem a good deal. I am not fussed on full leather or sat nav but at the same time i wouldn't want to just get a normal vrs hatch, add parking sensors and maxi dot and end up paying more anyway!

i have the figures on a printout and they look promising. However, he couldn't let me know what was available to order until later. This was at dartford and they have a black one with dsg waiting to be snapped up but i am pushing the limits as it is so will have to just accept a manual to save pennies if i do go for one.

Anyone else happen to know what the availability is on these ??

David - I would be very interested if this did come up but i am however a little unsure if i can have the hassle of selling the wifes zafira privately for the funds. This is where the dealers have you by the nuts all the time.

Hi Besty.

If you do decide to sell SWMBO's Zafira, & fancy a peek at my vRS, just let me know on here or maybe drop me a text. (07503 223380)

I'll part with it if I can find something that's as much fun to drive now, or if I decide that Octavia 3 is just so wonderful (!) & I "have" to have one!

Ciao, David C.

Tumble flap motor needs re calibration once in a while .If you disconnect the battery the throttle body needs realignment .Both can be done with vag com

Lol @aspman I've got an Occy VRS and apart from a new air con condenser, touch wood no major problems to report...yet :/ 64k had a major service/belt/water pump so fingers crossed.

By far my most favourite car!
