Have roof rails improved my fuel economy?

Featured Replies

HI.

Noticed today that MPG at 80mpg was noticeably better than last time I looked. This is not a scientific observation (only one vague sample over about 20 mins on the M4 with no obvious tail wind). Wondering if my new roof rails are responsible. Last time I looked (before the new rails) at anything over 60mph the consumption dropped well below 40mpg. Today it was well over 40.

Any thoughts?

No, physics dictates that roof rails will decrease fuel economy (unless they are powered, and supply some propulsion).

May just be the conditions at the time of test. Ive never noticed a decrease in fuel economy with mine, but i think it has to be at speed anyway.

:(

even the slightest headwind will hit the roomster economy, maybe you had dead air or even slight tail wind. Anything over 45mph in the roomster i suspect the mpg starts to plummet?

we have a roomster 1.2 TSI 105bhp with roor rails , on our recent trip to the ISLE of WIGHT we returned an average of 52.5 miles to the gallon

forgot to say on the m/ways our speed was between 65/69 mph

Maybe there was a tail wind. I not noticed such a dramatic improvement before but the economy is considerably worse over 50. I seem to get the best economy on A roads rather than the motorway.

I love my roofrails but I don't love the wind-noise they create in tandem with the plastic windscreen post trims.
