winter tyres on

Featured Replies

So after a few days of scraping the windscreen last month, and then the return of icy mornings since the end of last week,I've fitted the winters tyres. Of course I was doing this in warm sunshine wearing a t shirt it was so warm. Wonder if I'll trigger a prolonged spell of warm weather?

  • Meh, locking this now after such degeneration! I happily run all seasons in winter, even in 6" snow and on ice I've been able to get around. Its down to the driver and how they drive, more than the

  • You are wrong, I'm fully aware of the law about using summers in winter. It does not apply to using winter tyres in summer as you state. You need to look again. You are either misreading my posts, o

  • Steve I do believe you are a bit late with this, I came to the same conclusion a couple of weeks ago.

Haven't had the scraper out yet so my winters are still in the shed lol

Had about 8 days of scraping so far so reckoned it was about time

Usually wait till the temp stays under 10 degrees for a few days

All winters sat waiting ready to go; normally a job for the half term break end of October, which is usually about right weather wise here.

Mine went on last week as soon as they arrived! Figured they'd need a few hundred miles of wear before it gets really wet, cold and horrible. So far, slightly noisier than the S1 Evos (hardly surprising as they're rated 3db louder), but grip in the wet is already much better after just 50 miles of use and it's been 10-14 degrees so far. Can't wait to get to the snow in December!!

I might put on a pair of gloves before driving in winter conditions. :p

I'm sticking with all season tyres and driving with some sensibility. :) Darn sarf, winters barely seem worth it.

Darn sarf, they're not. But in Italy, they way are.

Besides, from what I've seen of your vehicle in years previous, you need all the grip you can get!!

Mine should arrive at the office tomorrow. But temps are still a bit high down here on the South Coast.

Invested in a set this Winter as we have been snowed in on previous years, you wait we won't get any this year.

I suspect that mine will sit in the garage for at least another month yet, oh well at least I will have them ready for when I do need to do the swap.

Even the steel wheels will get some poorboys to help keep the salt at bay.

Left home this morning at minus 2, flew to London where it was plus 12 when I landed

Winters on at the weekend on both cars. Noticed the difference on damp roads immediately (especially one of the lanes that was covered in mud!)

fluctuating between 2.5 and 1 degree here; coldest to date but overcast tonight. Oil struggled to warm as usual in such weather, took 13 miles to get to 90 and dropped back to 86 after a hill decent; DPF won't be happy, hates being chilly :S

Was thinking about changing mine but at 5.30 this morning it was still +3 and was t shirt weather this afternoon so not quite cold enough yet lol

Agree but the 1.8TSI 4x4 is to expensive an ownership proposition for me and a 1.2TSI, if our Fabia TSI 85 is anything to go by, is at best only on a par in terms of weekly running cost of fuel but without the extra driven wheels.

Residing as I do 'darn sarf', I'd usually wait until 1st week in November to fit my winters, but I'm travelling up to the North York Moors tomorrow morning for a week's holiday and I've not changed my tyres yet; as I want to enjoy the response of my 18" 'summers' on the Moorland roads.

Should I have changed? I'll tell you next weekend.

should be fine with the summers temp wise, it's if it rains a lots winters might be better.

Anyway enjoy your break up on the moors oh and watch out for the daft sheep appearing out of nowhere.

Still too warm down here on the South Coast - but we did have our first frost of the year this weekend - a low of 2 degrees.

I recon it'll be a few more weeks before it is cold enough to make the swap.

Paul

Loving mine in the wet and sub 10 degree temps. It's like a bone dry summer day. Like the weather's not even there. Very impressed!

Been up on the Moors this afternoon amidst sqaully showers, very blustery and got a boing from my dash at 4degC!

Summer tyres coped well nonetheless.

Winter boots (MSW 22s with 205/55/16 Nokian WR A3s) went on today. Mornings have been hovering around the 5-10 mark for the last few weeks - even had a bit of frost one morning. I'd have left it another week or two, but I won't get another weekend free until mid November.

Have to say I'm getting itchy fingers now. Not really cold enough here just yet, but it's definitely been wet. Will give it another week and see if the forecast cold snap turns into something longer.

I was aiming to change sometime in early November but with the 'cold snap' forecast for Friday and the weekend I might just change before then.

As long as it's consistently under 15, I think you'll all be fine. Bear in mind I'm probably in the warmest bit of the country ride now and mine are superb so far.
