SDI/TD. What fuel pump?

Featured Replies

Hey all.

Thinking of buying a 2001 1.9 SDI or TD and would like to know what pump is likely to be fitted to the motor.

Had major pump hassles for the last 3 years. Once with a poxy Delphi fitted to my Modus and the other with the Rover 45 (VP30), both of which have been a huge pain in my arse and cost me the price of a small semi detached bungalow :wall:

Been reading about and the SDI seems to be a tough old gal, allegedly favored by cab drivers for low maintenance and good economy? I understand that some of these motors can run on Bio, and as a local garage has started selling EN spec B100 I'm eager to give it a whirl!

Much thanks..

I haven't seen many (if any) posts on here about SDI or TDI fuel pump issues and I have been here for a 5+ years, so I think it would be safe to say that pump issues are not common place.

The SDI is pretty reliable, just a bit slow. the 110 seems the best bet between performance and good mpg figures - the only issue maybe being sticky vanes in the turbo, which is easily sorted if you don't mind taking the turbo off for a clean.

On the Bio front - pass.

For ultimate reliability - sdi , as said you'll have to be happy with around 65 horses. However a friend of mine just bought a fabia estate with one and he went to Glasgow and back (145 miles) and retopped up and it cost 12 quid, so 60mph gave him over 70mpg.

Tdi is remarkably similar engine, a lot faster and similar economy but as said the reliablility score is marked down 1 by having a turbo, but still mega reliable. Neither suffer pump issues often, hence on eBay I saw a cheap pump for sale and its still there now and that's been a month.

Main thing to watch for no matter what car you buy is that some now are starting to rust with these engines as they tend to be fitted to 04 plates and older.

For a newer car the pd105 lump is most reliable with sound pump and injectors, with equal reliability.

You can't beat a skoda diesel in my eyes never had any issues with engines

Apart from yours being slower than mine haha

Thanks for the posts fella's, it certainly is encouraging!

Is it correct that a Bosch pump is used with the older Octavia's/Fabia's. The reason I ask is unbeknown to me my girlfriends mums partners brother runs a Saxo with a Bosch on B100 for over a year with no Ill affects, the emissions he said was practically undetectable. I think I need to steer clear of PD pumps, they it seems don't like the Bio viscosity..

I believe you are right the injection pump diesels are all Bosch (SDI, 90 and 110bhp TDIs).

You sure?

I've known the SDI's to have Lucas pumps too I think which don't like Veg/Bio etc.

The old Pug and citroens also had either a Bosch or Lucas pump.

Used to run our Pug 306 1.9D on Veg oil.

Actually I think you're right.

Actually I think you're right.

I'm fairly sure that Phil is right about Lucas pumps being allergic to veggie oil.

I think PDs are too, but if we're talking 1.9Ds, the only one that's a PD is the 130bhp tune.
