skoda fun handbrake adjustment

Featured Replies

hi, how do you go about adjusting the handbrake, is there an ajuster somewhere? Thanks

If its the same as a hatchback take the handbrake cover off which should reveal the ends of the cables, each one has two nuts on the thread, to adjust you will need two 10mm spanners.

Ok thanks, is there any adjustment on the drums?

No, there isn't. They are self-adjusting type using a wedge pulled by a spring.

The book says:

The handbrake should be adjusted in such a way that the lever engages in the second detent with a force of 100 +40 N.

This translates to 22 +8 pounds of force.

In real life the adjusters get tired. With wheel removed and handbrake off, slaken the cables a bit, then, with the help of a torch turn the drum until you see the adjuster spring, and the hole in the wedge unit where it locates, thru the stud aperture.

Using a smallish strong philips, brad awl or similar, force the wedge downwards by spiking the spring attatchment hole and levering against the drum. When it goes no further its adjusted, then readjust the cables.

My car is 15 years old and seen all kinds of Poland mud, dust, gravel, snow and moisture yet my handbrake wedge and shoes never failed for a simple reason: all metal-to-metal friction points have a reasonable amount of anti-seize copper grease and I apply the handbrake every time I park. No rust, no locks, no squeaks.
