Usenet newbie!

Featured Replies

This has come up on the utorrent thread but I thought I'd start a new thread to stop it going off topic.

I want to ask how many people use them and is it much better quality/safer than using Torrents?

I'm tempted by astraweb and now newsdemon which was recommended by David8.

I've never used this type of download before but I understand you need a reader? Sabnzbd seems the way to go? But then you can add couchpotato and sickbeard. This is where I'm getting a bit lost!

Any info or what your set up is would really help!

  • hell yeah! when i spend i spend big! a whole £1.24

  • Had you already used the 7 day free trial?

Yes, much better than torrents :)

No need to upload, will max out your connection, and if your provider supports it, you can encrypt with SSL

Sabnzbd is what I use and can't fault it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Ive got sky unlimited so not sure if they allow ssl?

I use supernews and nzbmatrix.

I would recommend nzbdrone over sickbeard.

If you can browse SSL websites, then you can use SSL newsgroups - providing your package with ngroups, newsdemon etc supports SSL.

I see I'll have to try later.

Ok cheers I'll have a look at them to.

I use sabnzb and nzbmztrix, I think the matrix charged £7 one off payment, thats all you need really and win-rar of course, although not essential as Sabnzb does the decompressing for you

What does nzbmztrix add to sabnzb? I've searched it but its not very clear (for me!) Is it worth paying for?

Thanks for your help!

I use uTorrent, formally Vuze, without any particular problems via Sky Unlimited. Download volume isn't that much.

Would I benefit from using a newsgroup?

It allows you to find the Nzb's like google for newsgroups http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php

I see thanks, it's probably worth the one off payment. What I would like to do is run this through apple tv if I can figure it out!

Haha!

If you spank the HD stuff, then yes if it's a few mp3 albums a month then not really, all depends on how much you want and how quick you want it

Jailbroken?

Another vote for SABnzbd+

SSL really does depend on how paranoid you are with regards to the content you acquire.

So let me get this straight...

Sabnzb is a program for downloading and unpacking/decoding items in the same way you need utorrent to download torrents?

but unlike torrents u can't just browse a website (such as one for torrents that has sculduderous sea farers in it) and click download you need a paid service such as astraweb or newsdemon to find and download stuff?

And something like newsdemon you can pay a one off fee for a certain amount of downloads or a monthly fee for a certain amount per month?

The payment allows you more reliable and faster downloads than P2P stuff like torrents?

Yarp, you got it.

Newsgroups make sense if you are a heavy downloader.

I rarely bother with "live" TV any more its all automated downloads via my server.

Yes they certainly do and check the pay per download plans here as they don't require you to top up monthly + only expire when you've maxxed them out.

I don't have one at the moment I use my ps3 as the media server. Yep jailbroken :) Still looking at that though.

I'd prefer to have it if I could!

I like the sound of that!

Yer I think i'll try one of those first. Going to join up now! :giggle:

I've joined up to newsdemon, nzb matrix and installed sabnzbd for the downloading. Because I installed sabzbd before nzb matrix they havn't linked so I need to try and go back to do that.

At the moment I'm still getting my head around it all. I've managed to download a few things so it's a start.. It is really quick though :)

Ah now I understand, thanks for that PastyBoy!

Will do some searching & investigating on Friday night me thinks.

If you're after a lot of TV series, then the Sickbeard / Sabnzbd+ combination is excellent.

Just add the name of the TV shows you want to Sickbeard and (once it's all set up correctly!) it'll automatically connect to your choice of Usenet indexing service and check for new (and existing if you require) episodes of that particular show(s). Then sends the nzb file to Sabnzbd+ for scheduled downloading, Configure Sabnzbd+ to save your shows (or Movies, apps whatever) where you want them saved to (in my case, TV shows to "TV SHOWS" folder on my NAS, mapped as a network drive) and movies to the "MOVIES" folder, and it'll unRAR, fix if necessary and save the shows easily in a folder structure e.g.

T:\TV SHOWS\MODERN FAMILY\SEASON 1\Modern Family - S01E01 - Pilot.mkv

Sickbeard will even watch for "nuked" episodes (e.g. audio out of sync with video) and re-download a "proper" when one becomes available if you want it to!

Edited to add:

All the above information, I just heard from some bloke down the local pub. Who dreamt it all up!
