Wifi bridge? Or Access Point?

Featured Replies

Hi,

The only place I can get my broadband connection to operate reliably is from the master BT socket. If I connect via any extension cables I get dropouts and loss of connection. It seems stable (certainly compared to before) when connected to the master socket.

I've tried fitting an i-plate. That did increase speed from a pitiful 2mbps to above 5.

Now the problem is that the router is in the opposite corner of the house from my Sky+HD box and sony bluray player (used to connect to Sky Anytime and LoveFilm respectively)

What I need is something to receive the wireless signal, and output to the Sky+ and bluray player via wired connection.

It looks as though the term for this used to be "wifi bridge" but I think terminology has moved on now. Is this the same as an Access Point?

Can anyone recommend a device to do this please?

thanks

Martin

I use Solwise gigabit home plugs, I send the signal to an unmanaged gigabit switch, which then feeds the PS3, TV, Skybox and media server, any of the above rated at 200Mbps should do the trick for you, far more relaible than wireless.

Thanks for the recommendation. That looks just the ticket.

Check out the new Devolo homeplugs - some of their "plugs" offer a 3 port switch and wifi from one unit. Handy for your TV corner - Sky Plus, TV, Wii (via wifi), PS3, etc.....

I have used these at my parents (old house where wifi can't get from one room to another!) and at my house - works a treat down 50m of armoured cable to the garage :-)
