to grease or not to grease

Featured Replies

I have always applied golden grease to wheel bolts/studs before replacing them and torque tightening them. I have been doing this for over 30 years and have never had one come loose. However, a mechanic friend of mine tells me that this is forbidden on big lorries, etc. as they may come loose. What do you all think?

Noz.

The threads should be dry, however I used to copper slip them when I used to rally, the only thing I copper slip now though is the centre bore of the wheels (so they do not corrode onto the hubs)

Wagon wheel nuts are conta -rotating ( think that's the word) . They tighten towards the front and loosen towards the rear. ie:-The near side wheels tighten anti clockwise, this is so the turning of the wheels tend to tighten the wheel nut. When I used to change wagon wheels I/ we always put copper grease on the threads
