Auto-locking oddity...

Featured Replies

Drove about 30-35 miles around and about in London today. On the final trip home (about 3 miles) the car locked itself 3 times. Each time I unlocked outing the drivers switch to see if it would do it again. It did, but there was seemingly no cause. Speed etc had no impact - it was entirely sporadic.

Any ideas?

Broken door switch module thingy in one of your doors. Other symptoms to look out for are the puddle lights not working, the alarm going off when you're driving, and coming back to your parked car to find your electric windows open.

something similar to this I imagine

I am starting to have this problem too, another bloody hassle pain in the pi33ing ar3se problem to spend a few hours with. My "door open" light has stopped working too only for the drivers side. Just make sure you don't ever leave the keys in it for a second, because you know that it'll lock you out a soon as it gets chance!

Excellent... Just the sort of electrical gremlin I wanted! Thanks though guys!

Will keep an eye on it! Suspected the rain may be involved... I am a little concerned about it unlocking itself/windows opening when I'm not about - its not like living in London is forgiving for that sort of thing!

EDIT: I had 3 of the door handles off not that long ago - any chance that could be involved?

Nah, it's not necessarily rain or your DIY. IIRC it's due to soldered connections breaking inside the module, and then things start creating circuits when they shouldn't, and not making circuits when they should. Standard electrical gremlin, but not always prompted by anything. There's some repair guides on VWVortex, but I'm not skilled enough with a soldering iron to attempt it myself.
