Good day at the Pod for the Mongrel

Featured Replies

I didn't beat my previous PB - 13.707, but I got damn close with a 13.733

The weird thing is I best ET ever was 105 mph and I never thought I would beat that. Santa Pod has a 110mph limit until you need to wear a helmet, and guess what?! I did 110.05 on my 2nd run! D'oh! So spent an hour in a panic around Wellingborough looking for a helmet but in the end thanks to google, found a motorbike place and got an open face for £40. Sorted!

Annoyance of the day was trying semi slicks as they simply couldn't get hot enough. I'm never using them again. Debating whether to try a size like 235/40 R17 on road tyres?

All my trap speeds were around 110, with one being close enough for me to claim 111. ;) Nice to know I have a car which gets to 110mph in under 14 seconds.

Also had a little anniversary on the way back. 120K and still going strong.

Well done mate! All with a gubbed wheel bearing :p

Great work.

Nice times, with that kind of terminal speeds you've got be losing time on either the start or gear changes.

Should be 13.5s or a bit less.

My terminals were 5mph slower but 0.1 second less.

Much wind?

Temp?

Temp?

Well, I did have a pie last night but I felt about right temp wise. Oh, at the pod?! :D Wind was from the side, fairly light. Temps early on were nice and cool. Around 6 degrees, but it warmed up in the bright sun to around 13.

Great times Jason. B)

Well I hope you can crack the first 60 foot.

If you can get that down to the 2.3 my old car was running you will potentially get under 13.5, which would be seriously impressive and would tie in with the 275 odd bhp your car makes.

Even so, getting over 110MPH is great and a good sign of things to come.

quick queston how come u dont get a airbag light with your wheel?

Its been "dealt with" ;)

As its my car I just removed and split the dashpod, and blanked off the bulb. Could be an issue come next MOT but we'll see.

quick queston how come u dont get a airbag light with your wheel?

3.3ohm resistor (IIRC) wired into the airbag wiring. Alternatively, disable the driver's airbag with VCDS (mine has a resistor but the wiring is flaky, so I've disabled it). The light now flashes on startup and then goes out. Come MOT time, I'll swap the wheel back and re-enable the airbag so there's no dodgy testing going on.

Sorry to go OT but don't suppose you know where in vagcom I can disable the airbag?

Not off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure that once you're into module 15 adaptation, if you have a recent version of VCDS which has the drop down "common adaptation" list, it's listed in there. If you don't, I can have a look tonight and see which channel that actually refers to.

Good times Jason, as Richard said if you can nail the first 60ft then you will be on to an even better time.

I've never been up the strip, but really fancy giving it a go now! All I can see it leading to is spending more money on tuning though

Looks like I'm heading back on Sunday for a RWYB day to try and get that time beaten! Initial weather forecast is looking pretty good to me. :)

What spec does this have?

Or do you have a build thread for it somewhere?

  • Author

GTB2260vk turbo and plenty of other mods. In this case I was also chucking the nitrous on for 3rd and 4th gear. Probably explains my faster trap speed.

sounds really nice on the video, nice deep grunt.

so in terms of other cars, what were you racing against and/or beating?

Gives a better idea of the time you were managing!

What are your plans for driving up etc? I am up for this :)

Was usually mark 4 golfs, R32 and similar. The one car I lost to was a R-Tech mk4 GTI that did 13 flat, and that was the run I flopped out on on too. All the others I won fairly comfortably.

Well, was contemplating there and back in a day, but to be honest, I'm too old to be leaving Devon at 4am, so might well stay with my cousin in leics again on Sat night as its only a 30 mile drive to the Pod. Could convoy back though. Kettering travelodge also has rooms @ £24 for that night. I've already booked now, as that saves even more time / distance for me.

I'm definitely coming if the weather forecast looks good the day before. I'm going to book in at the Northampton travelodge though, £35 and can cancel for no extra cost up until 12pm on Saturday.

Well, I'm booked in @ Kettering, and room if you want.

Weather is looking decent, so going to go either way (can't cancel :D), and hopefully the forecast will remain decent. :)
