Fabia II - best place to tap switched 12V & lighting circuit

Featured Replies

I'm in the middle of swapping the Dance stereo for an after market single DIN unit, and its turned out to be rather more involved than I anticipated. I need an ignition switched 12V feed and also a feed from the lighting circuit (to dim stereo display at night) and these connections don't exist in the quadlock stereo connector. I presume the original stereo uses CAN bus for these functions.

No doubt you can tap the wires at the fuse box, but it doesn't seem to be very easy to get at.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions? Thanks.

Go and get a can bus interface. Will give the headunit all it requires and will allow steering controls if you have them. Also if its a DVD wire the brake cable to the stereos earth and the pic will always be visable

Thanks for the suggestion, I've ordered one.

Wish I had realised that I needed one of these before:

1) deciding to fit an after market stereo - far more hassle & cost than it is worth

2) breaking part of my dashboard in the hunt for a suitable wire to tap for the illumination signal to the stereo

They do tend to be alot more involved than people first think especially with the new can bus system. Another positive about the interface is it stops your battery going flat aswell. Ask away if there's anything else your unsure of aswell.

Btw did you also order the patch lead for the canbus and steering wheel controls??

Thanks. I think I now have a good understanding of what is involved, I just wish I had done more research before buying the stereo as it has cost me about £80 more than expected so far.

I don't have steering wheel controls, so just need the interface for the switched +12V and illumination signal. I ordered a kit that includes the CAN bus interface and a wiring loom that connects to the Quadlock connector on the wiring loom, and has ISO radio connectors at the other plus a few flying leads that I won't need (reverse signal etc).

Like the original poster, I also need an ignition switched 12V feed, in my case for my aftermarket third party BT handsfree. Originally it gets the feed from the cig. lighter, but as the lighter stays powered with no ignition, BT remains connected and my calls ring in the car when at home - quite frustrating!

I find the CAN Bus adaptor too expensive... As an alternative - and cheap - solution, I have tried to find an unused swithced 12V fuse, but none of the unused fuses are wired by default :(

I can imagine two approaches:

- tap a swithced 12V from somewhere

- hack the cig. ligter so it becomes 12V ignition switched

If anyone has some experience with this, please share! Thanks!

Hi Motyoo

That's the problem with Can-bus you don't get a switched supply, as its switched via the can bus so you will need to get a adapter so it will switch

This means there's no way to get switched supply from somewhere else than the can bus?

Tap into the fuse for the rear wiper (not critical for safe driving should it blow) using one of these

They also do full size blade fuse ones. Just wired a charging cradle for my phone into the Roomster using one of these

This sound a good idea, but is it safe? Do I risk to damage the fuse box / car elecronics / rear wiper electronics? Any problems using the wiper while using BT and charging the phone? (Forgot to say that the cig. plug powers not only the BT but charges the phone too.)

IMO yes, safe. This piggyback 'add a circuit' is completely removable and separately fused, which is one of the reasons I used it as I have little knowledge (or cajones) when it comes to vehicle electrics.

Great! I asked a car mechanic and he also said it's safe. Thanks a lot again!

I've managed to do the poor man's version of the 12V tapping. Here's a short picture report:

Here's my Dension BT handsfree device. Charging and line-out wires go hidden, behind the dash:

Here's how I tapped ignition switched power from the AC fuse in the fuse box:

I pulled the wire to the radio compartement, and installed a cig. lighter socket at the very bottom using my swithed power. All that was left to do is connect the (cig. lighter) power of the BT device.

And tadaa, here I have an ignition swithed BT handsfree in my Fabia :)

Nice tidy job that

Thanks :)

There's one more thing unresolved: I'd like to connect the handsfree unit to my radio's phone connectors. There would be no problem connecting the line-out wires (now connected to the aux-in) to the Tel + / - input of the radio. But I don't have a Mute wire from my handsfree. Maybe I could make myself a circuit that produces the Mute signal from the line-out, but I don't know exactly what the Mute signal should really be. Can you please help me out?

Would someone be so kind as to point out which adapter I will need?

Is there one that goes from the car fakra loom to canbus adapter to iso?

  • 3 years later...

Is there any reason an aftermarket stereo couldn’t be tapped into the old radio fuse location in the fuse box? Presumably this fuse will now be free
