strongley thinking of getting a wrx ,,,any former owners on here ?

Featured Replies

im strongely thinking of getting a wrx impreza,,perhaps a 02/03 model.. iv always wanted one,, and ive gotten a fairly decent cash offer on my octy vrs.. i know this isnt a subaru forum and i might be turning my back on the skoda :( , but im just wondering have any of ye lads experince of wrx imprezas ? and how would the compare for day to day driving against my octy ???? mpg, bhp differences, etc etc

I had a Classic MY 99 Turbo running 231 BHP, on 17s Eibachs S/S Back Box, how would it compare to your Octy, Power YES, Handling Yes, Noise of the Flat Four Fantastic Burbling, Interior wore well, No Toys in mine, Everthing about my Impreza I loved and miss. The only down side was the MPG, you could not achieve a respectable figure even if you free wheeled. Over 3,rpm and you wont get very far, good FUN but for not very long. Fuel Station required. Not the fastest certainly quick of the mark and through the bends you can wave goodbye. If I had the money my next car would be a Scoob, To-morrow

I had an 04 plate WRX SL from new, and loved it. I traded my last octavia vrs in for it, which at the time I thought was a good deal. The running costs were higher ie fuel, servicing etc but the pay off was performance.

The only thing in my opinion that let it down was the build quality and poor boot size. My mrs went mental when I brought it home as we couldn't fit the baby's buggy in it. :)

I'd say it is car worth owning, If you've always wanted one then go for it.

My mate had a Colin McRae edition, he called it the "half a tank car" this was because if he went from home to work it would use half a tank of fuel, if he nipped to the shop it would use half a tank.

Very quick though and a great looking car.

Like any car it depends how you drive. I used to commute weekly to Birmingham from Northumberland and didn't find it too bad on a run. The killer really was around town and and when you give it some. Trouble is, I used to give it some too often. ;)

Get a Evo 5 Never mind all these mass produced scoobys

Like this one.... This is the same guy who had the "half a tank" Scooby

You'd need to sell a kidney to run that.

Id have an evo 5 aswell. Or a 6 tommi makkinen if funds stretched to it

A mate of mine reckons I should go all out an get an sti type r ?

If you drive steady never letting the Turbo spin you might get 28mpg, if you start wailing it 18mpg if you go everywhere at 56mph you might get 29, no matter what you do thats about all you will get. A STI type R nice RA even better, still same MPG. Besides they are cheap now so nothing to loose, Oh if you do get one have the 4 wheel aligniment done Camber and Toe, cornering will never be the same, you can throw the brakes away, only needed for stopping, but not in an emergency they are *^"t.

I had 3 classic scoobies

First was a 1994 WRX wagon that was chipped and I really liked that.

Then a 1998 UK spec metalic green sallon. One of my best cars. I messed with that quite a lot, Ninja exhaust sounded the biz.

Then a 1996 WRX that was a pile of ****e too tuned and unreliable.

I love these cars, 4WD, sound, looks of the classic, but i went from them to my VRS and the VRS ticks more box's for me. Servicing, easy to work on myself, more room, boot space huge, running cost lower. And everyone knows a scooby is quick so you always get idiots trying it on. The VRS is nice coz folks don't think it is a quick car.

As mentioned the real downer on the Scooby is MPG. I was typicaly getting closer to 17MPG around town. And not much more than 26MPG on longer runs. I felt i was always planning routes by petrol station stops.

Would I have a scooby again yes when the time is right. But think next car is a S4 or maybe M3 or if i can afford it a RS4.

Mates got a wrx circa 350bhp but will soon to be 400bhp+. Runs anti lag and alsorts, sounds and goes like nothing I've seen but as folk have said its a greedy old beast. So much so that he runs a mk5 gt tdi golf as a daily and only uses it once or twice a week.

Collyb, ask yourself "do I have deep pockets"

The biggest downside to either a Scooby or a Evo, is the amount of pee-taking you will have directed towards you from other drivers.

The mpg issue is secondary imo - but hoonage 18mpg is going to hurt - and driving slowly is ghey, they're not meant for it

These days, I'd be looking at a Scooby or Evo only as a 2nd car/toy.

Tuning potential on scoobies is big and cheap

FWD Octavia's have limited potential TBH, and tuning an Octavia 4x4 would be (at least) twice as expensive to tune (bhp for bhp) as a scooby/Evo these days.

Must admit there's something satisfying making it hard work for the chavs in their Scoobys or evos lol

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

Haha really?...

There either not driving them properly or there only pimped out sports.

Driving them like they have something to prove lol

Had one trying to block me on a roundabout once, don't think he realized I was turning left, he didn't make it round lol. Think it was due to the icy conditions and the fact I was on winters lol

Sooooo many of those around. ;)

Had a plonker come up alongside the wife's E92 335i in a pretty standard looking blue WRX in Cheltenham. He was revving away like a tit at the lights, they changed, I left him for absolute dead, and he went spinning sideways hard into the kerb.

Don't tend to find it so often with Evo drivers around here.

Nearly bought an Evo IX instead of the Beemer. Glad I didn't, the service costs are pretty harsh.

Edit: Not sure WHY that has come up as a link...???

Well it's looking like I will a citreon berlingo 1.6 hdi as a daily driver from next week on :) , so I may purchase myself something crazy as a weekend machine .

Evos are massive money pits.

The old 90's scoobies have got a bad rep as thug cars in the past ten years or so and as said you will get a shock at running costs compared to an Octavia.

Drove an 05 WRX at a training day at Castle Combe back in 2006 and I actually felt the Megane 225's we had on the same day were faster and more composed than the scoobies despite being FWD. Not that I would want one as a daily driver, the ride was a bit too harsh.

I am biased when it comes to this question as I have a few scooby owning mates, BUT as Snowmuncher says tuning a 4x4 Octy can get pricey, HOWEVER from personal experience (not counting a blown gearbox, which IS a known weak point) my Octy is far more reliable than the scoobies, servicing is peanuts, they can be bought dirt cheap and will most likely have been driven very carefully by an old fart, they LOVE LPG making them capable of 80+ MPG equivalent when driven at 70-80 on a long run(with my mods anyway :p ), mine has not been left for dead by my mates 06 wrx yet, granted that could be down to him, but with a bit of work the Octy 4x4 can be a great car. (P.S. Makes him cry when we fill up :D)

Going to be breaking my mates scooby this week and its spec is mental but you need massive pockets but nothing can touch it

Running well into the 500 with meth and its brutal

11.6 q mile

So if you want any nice bits just shout all going cheap as he is going home to South Africa in 2 months
