Owners of a standard Garrett PD130 Turbo

Featured Replies

Hi

As some of you know I've recently replaced my KKK turbo with a new standard Garrett PD130.

After driving it around I've noticed a hissing noise coming from the turbo which I assume is the pressure/boost!

Can anyone confirm if that's the noise you get when you're making the turbo work on these particular one's?

Apologies for such a silly question, it's just a noise I've never before!

Cheers

sounds like a slight leak. give your pipes a check again might just be loose.

Can this cause me severe issues?

I'm no expert but I still doubt it would cause severe issues in the short term, surely it just reduces your performance which you don't want anyway and will drive up your MPG too so you'd be mad not to want to get it fixed ?

Boost leaks can cause the turbo to overspool due to more boost being requested. Eventually that can lead to turbo failure. As suggested, I'd check for leaks or loose connections, or have it looked over by a trusted mechanic to be on the safe side.

A lot of places have smoke test sets to pinpoint boost leaks. Hopefully all will be fine, in my experience I'd get it checked just to be sure.

Good luck

Thanks all for your comments and recommendations.

I've got it booked back in tomorrow for a once over, with the aim to fix any leaks or loose fittings etc.

Can't wait to get back to normal with this car

Well, it appears I have a split in the lower intercooler pipe, hence the hissing sound. Having it replaced on the weekend by a friend, as I'm not great with fixing cars!

Hopefully that'll be the end of all these turbo issues! Earlier in the year the turbo seals popped off and needed replacing, then the turbo popped last month and now this! My luck must start getting better!! :wonder:

Possibly the split boost pipe happened before the turbo popped (helping the turbo to pop). You may not have noticed it if you were happy/content with the car. After having the turbo replaced... You may have been a little more alert/paranoid about any little noises.

Fingers crossed that's the end of your immediate problems with the car.

Cheers,

J.

Thought I found the issue, but still occuring!

Yesterday me and my mate replaced the lower intercooler hose which did need replacing. One lug was worn and the pipe was starting to split! However, after replacing it the weard noise is still happening!

Would you all recommend taking it to a turbo specialist now, as I'm getting tired of these turbo issues now?

The only thing that would be useful to know is if this particular turbo makes that noise as standard.

If you have a standard Garrett PD130 turbo on you Fabia vRS, please can you tell me what noise you get when giving it some gas.

Many thanks

Fabia's had KKK's so I doubt you'll get many replies in that area. Have you taken the car to a garage?

Not yet, but been thinking of taking to a tuning firm, as they'll probably have a better idea of the issue i.e Awesome GTI

I get a faint police siren at low revs and a faint whistle on idle.

I wish it was quiet!

It like something's let off steam when hitting 2k rpm and above. If you imagine a petrol with a dump valve noise, it's like that.

If you've recently had the turbo put on then make sure the egr pipe is tightened fully on the manifold. When me and the old man put mine back on he put the nuts on hand tight and then forgot to go back and tighten them! We started it up and it sounded it fine went down to road and only when it had a few revs on it did it sound like the noise you describe. Worth checking to rule out although bit of a pain to get to right down the back of engine.

Thanks for this info, that's really useful. It does make me wonder if its manifold related - even a dodgy gasket!

Would something like a loose EGR pipe or dodgy gasket cause me great issues?

The other issues I'm experiencing with this is loads more black smoke than normal, even when I'm being extremely light on the gas. My MPG is poor too! Would a diagnostic test rule this issue out?

Excess smoke and reduced MPG, I'd say it's deffo the EGR. Take the boost pipe off and have a look inside the EGR - it's quite possible that the valve is gunked up with soot and oil deposits.

As I'm not really good at mechanics, I've got the car booked into Tuning Developments next week for a dyno/diagnostic test. Turbo Dynamics who sold me the turbo are tuning partners of this firm, so I'm hoping they will be able to pin point the underlying issue!

Ive just had a brand new pd130 Garret pal and have the same issue!

Can u get it to make the hiss noise while stationary holding the revs??

  • Author

Hi mate, sorry not replied sooner!

I can replicate the issue when stationary, but it's nowhere's near as bad as driving along! It's actually very loud when you start giving it some stick! Do you find that too?

I've got the car booked into the garage who fitted it Monday. They seem to think the EGR valve is sooted up and possible has a dodgy gasket on either the manifold or EGR!

It's bloody annoying me at present (excuse the French).

Smoke test might reveal more.

Well if there's a fail in that test, then I will definitely not pass!

Do you get plenty of smoke and slight power loss or is it just that hiss noise?

When moving its like a turbo whistle noise, but very high pitched like. Its hard to explain. I would say maybe its normall but my car didnt do this when i first got it back

  • Author

Exactly the same here. Didn't notice that noise until after a few days and its hot louder since it started!

Oh well, hopefully the garage will pinpoint the problem - fingers crossed!!

Hopefully pal. Let us know dude coz its annoying the **** out of me! lol
