Cracked front fog light, again.

Featured Replies

Is there such a thing as a front fog light's guard or protector for the Fabia MK1 Vrs? I've looked at Lamin-x website who provide a clear protective film, I wonder if anyone has had experience of this?

yellow lamin--x on the fogs

Yellow light penetrates fog better than white, and yellow dazzles less are both myths.

Perhaps the OP would be better advised to stop following other traffic so closely, since I've never had a cracked lens in over 20 years (variety of makes and models)?

I have a cracked one, I plan to replace both and lamin-x them. I have no idea if it happened during my ownership or not though :S

Its a known fact that Yellow light penetrates fog better than white

Can you give me evidence for your contra opinion Ken please?

The OP isnt necessarily following close to the car in front..He may have been very unlucky..simply that

Ive never had one either in 40 years of driving. I consider luck rather than driving technique to be the reason

To answer the first post, lamin x is very tough considering what it is.

I'd say it provides a fair bit of protection to the glass lenses of the fogs.

I opted for yellow myself on my Fabias fogs over a couple of years ago

and started a bit of a craze. I'd definitely say it was worth doing.

But if the light colour issue bothers you then just get clear lamin x .

I'm sure they do it in clear.

To do the best and tidiest job I'd say taking the fogs off,

cleaning them and lamin xing on the bench is the best way to do it.

I have black fly eyes over the top of that now lol. To be fair I only have my fogs on

if I am on track as the distinctive yellow light tells Mrs Grr to get the camera ready :)

My front foglight broke 2 days after I bought my brand new Fabia. From looking at other posts it seems to be common, which makes one suspect the lamps were none too sturdy. That was 8 years ago and (touch wood) I've had no further problems. They are / were expensive and the stealers wanted a fortune to fit the replacement. Expecting to have to buy another I experimented on the broken one and found that the plastic can be glued and that a piece of similar plastic can be glued over the top to strengthen the lens. Laminate I tried did not stay on - but it was not one mentioned in posts above.

Ken - think your reply was a little harsh chap. I'm not pig to lie and say I have never driven too close to the car in front but the only time I've ever had a fog light smash (albeit on a Fiat Punto GT) was when traveling in winter and the car in front threw a few 50p sized stones backwards at me. One dented the bonnet then hit the windscreen passenger side and the other obliterated the drivers side fog light. That was at 60mph on the A1 near Biggleswade. It was in minus numbers and I was 4+ seconds behind the car in front. To say you've never had it happen to you is just luck! I hope it doesn't happen either as its a total pain in the ass! :0D

Anyhoo, lamin-x will help to an extent but a stone/pebble flying at a closing speed of 100mph (50mph backwards and you travelling 50 forwards) will still break it if you are unfortunate enough.

Chris

If that happened it would at least help to hold the glass together

preventing it from going under your tyre. That's part of why it's used

in Motorsport. To reduce dangerous track debris in the event of contact/crash.

Good point! :0)

Fog light protectors are available on ebay

My brand new Octavia Blackline got a smashed fog light within a week of use. Not happy with how much I'm having to pay for a replacement to be fitted, so i need to look at some means of preventing it happening again.

Lamin-X is your friend :)
