Superb 1.9TDI

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

im still on the Hunt for my superb, and recently looked at one.

the guy thats selling it is a skoda salesman, so i was hoping the car was in good order as hes had it the last 6 years.

Anyway the car is described as an elegance model, although a motorcheck shows it up as prestige model. It has no parking sensors either which he mentioned were not standard on the elegance. Can anyone shed any light on this?

The car is as follows: 05 1.9TDI 96K miles, serviced every 15000 miles.

Once i drove the car over a rough road, immediately i could feel a banging (like a shock) on the passenger side front wheel. it was the main issue why i didnt buy it. He has since told me that there was only 10PSI on 17 inch wheels and that that was what was causing this - im skeptical.

There was also a very slight whine or whistle (barely audible) when accelerating, worried it may be signs of a turbo about trouble - What do you guys think?

Thanks as ever for all your help!

Mine's Elegance spec and came with standard fit parking sensors.

If the knocking's gone when the tyre's at the right pressure, he might be right, but I'd be be looking very closely from the droplinks up.

You're right to be sceptical - fools rush in....

My 1.9 B5 Passat (non PD) had an audible turbo whistle which you could make out with a window open and it didn't change for the 80k miles I owned it.

15k miles service intervals might be more than most people would be comfortable with but might not be out of spec and if everything's been done to service schedule it might not be an issue. Was it last serviced at 90k, did it say what oil it had and what does it look like now?

The MKI in the UK came in the following trim levels:

Classic (the most basic)

Comfort

Elegance

L&K

The Comfort, Elegance and L&K's all had parking sensors as std.

Are you in the UK?

If you are then I would imagine the car is either an import or more likely has had a replacement bumper / bump strips.

Never trust a car salesman's word, check for yourself.

I'd walk away if a salesman's prepared to let you test drive a car the size and weight of a Superb with only 10psi in the tyres? What kind of impression did he think that would make?

And the Elegance has pretty much everything as standard, including parking sensors.

I've never understood car salesman who don't seem to have any passion for cars. There are plenty of other good Superbs about so keep looking.

Definitely should have Parking Sensors!

And Christ, if he can't get the bloody tyres pumped up, what else will be wrong with it! Walk away!

Thanks Gents!

Yeah, it doesnt exactly fill me with confidence. Pity, because its the exact car im looking for!

He said he is doing a bit of "fine tuning" on it today so ill see what he comes back with.

im in Ireland and the superb comes in the following trim levels (dunno if the order is correct)

Classic

Comfort

Ambition

Exclusive

Prestige

Elegance

L&K

So it gets confusing and is difficult to find out what trim levels cars have exactly.

Some very good points above! Thanks

AIUI the specs relate to:

Ireland...............................UK

Ambition.............................Classic

Exclusive.............................Comfort

Prestige...............................Elegance

........................L&K

Some things in the UK you get as std spec will be omitted Irish spec cars, but then the Irish ones will gain certain things that you don't get in the UK.

Swings and roundabouts really, just make sure of any implications you may have (insurance etc) if it's a imported UK car.

Why not contact a couple of Skoda dealers in Ireland and ask them what the spec of the models were? You might be lucky and talk to a salesman/parts guy who's actually worked there a few years and knows.

But a Skoda salesman who has owned his own Superb for 6 years and telling the complete truth...?

good luck

Yes,

Its tough when you spot a car, that is the car you want but its rough. i imagined that a salesman would have looked after his car, hoping that access to cheaper parts/oils and labour may have helped in its upkeep.

He has rang me back today, telling me that there was something loose in the front wheel, and itll cost 150 to fix it. I said if he fixed it i would drive it and see then. he then said he wasnt going to spend money on it unless i was buying it!!!! Weird, what sort of a fool does he think i am....

anyways, im finding this site extremely helpful. its getting difficult to find good superb 1`s. there are not without their problems as i originally thought. i thought they were rather trouble free.

"But a Skoda salesman who has owned his own Superb for 6 years and telling the complete truth...?"

sidewaze, can you elaborate on the above?

Thanks again guys!

Walk away from it and don't look back, he clearly only spends money on the car when he really has to. Do you really want to buying into that?

There are lots around, many will of had water ingress though, you would be wise to steer clear of them, find a good one and you will love it, buy a bad one and you will regret it big time.
