tyre wear - what can I expect?

Featured Replies

Just checked the front continentals on my superb and they are almost on the wear indicators - so probably have about 3.5mm left on them.

I've done 12,000 miles - so I guess these will be shot by the time I do another 3000, just in time for Christmas!

Couple of questions - is 15k reasonable for the front? (backs are ok - probably 5mm left) and what brands should I consider?

size is 225-40-r18-92y

Thanks - We have Hankooks on our kia soul (with 18" rims) and these have done almost 40k miles and still have plenty of life left - so would consider these as a starting point.

I'm in a similar place with OE Continentals - 3mm @ 12k miles. It's a heavy engine and I'm light on the brakes,so I corner quite fast...

It's a little disappointing, but not unusual on 170CR.

Tyre wear is so subjective. i rarely wear a tyre out inside 35,000 miles yet a mate who used to drive the same car as me rarely got more than 10,000 miles out of a front set.

A grippy tyre will always wear quicker than a less grippy one so its a choice you need to make but yes 15-18k is about normal for fronts with the rears lasting around 25k

I'm not a fan of the continentals and have been using Eagle F1's on mine , they last a little longer and give better performance in the cold and wet weather

The Contis on the front axle lasted just shy of 12k before hitting the legal limit. I'd have expected more than that having had Contis on my three previous cars, the last being a remapped Octavia 2.0TDI but I guess the old barge is heavier then it looks :)

I've now swapped them for Bridgestones which should have a lower wear rate.

I agree. The OE Conti PremiumContact 2 E tyre's fitted to my Greenline Combi have covered 36,900 miles and yet has 3.5mm of tread depth remaining on the front axle and 6mm depth on the rear axle. From looking on the Conti Global and UK websites, it appears this tyre is discontinued, however, it is still stocked by Mytyres.co.uk at a delivered price of £76.20 per tyre.

Despite being an 'eco' oriented tyre, the wet and grip levels have impressed me.

If I had to pay for my own tyres, I'd be more than happy to stick with the same tyre.

I'm a strong believer in the regular checking of tyre pressures. I usually do so every week, which may be another reason for the longevity of my Superb's tyres.

I've only had my Superb for two months so I can't comment on its tyres, but my Land Cruiser running on General Grabber did 50k on the front (changed Dec11) and the rears are still on and will be changed when I get back to the UK in December.

I can't remember not getting 40k on any set of tyres over the last 50 years, I once had a Ford Capri that I sold at 80k with the original Michelin X on.

I traded my lc 120 for the superb. I did 34000 miles on the original Dunlop rubber before the fronts needed replacing - mostly due to the edges wearing - the rears still had 6mm left at 40,000 miles.

Years ago I had a mondeo that ate front tyres - 70k a year and a new front set every 3 months.

I definitely drive the cars harder than big 4x4's though so not an easy comparison.

I got over 18k out of my front Conti 2's,and I have a bit of fun with the right foot now & agian. I drive a fair bit of motorway, so maybe the owners that wear them out in 12k are town drivers? I put Conti 3's on now, so we'll have to see how these do? they do grip better though.

I got 17K out of the original Contis on the front and went to bridgestones after that and been getting 30K out of them on the front.
