slow fabia

Featured Replies

hi guys i gotta say i love my little fabia but its the slowest car i have ever owned . my last car golf tdi mk5 and before that volvo v70 t5 .i have had to downgrade due to cost of being out of work for a while . my fabia is an 03 model 1.9 sdi estate its the most basic car i have seen in a long time . not even front leccy windows or central locking (there should be a law against cars without c/l) but hey its less to go wrong at the mo so it suits me also its doing around 60 mpg so cant complain i cant even remember that far back when i filled it with diesel lol

right ill get to the point what can i do to make it quicker . i dont want to change much as i want to keep the cost down . also i dont care about top end speed as im not a motorway driver i just need quicker acceleration . i seen these chip things on the big auction site and wondered are they any good or can someone reccomend anything thank you in advance all

Unfortunately, without a turbo charger, your options are somewhat limited.

Might be better off looking at a performance air filter rather than a SDI tuning box. Whatever you do (short of bolting a turbo on...probably not possible), you're only looking at getting a few bhp more.

If you want a proper boost, youll need to get it professionally remapped. An ebay resiator box will not be any good, it simply tricks the engine to increase fuelling.

Save your money till you are back in work and buy a faster car when you can afford it.

You can map an SDI but you'll only gain 8-10bhp

and see a slight increase in fuel economy. I had one for four years

nearly and agree, they aren't the quickest. My vRS is the same size

and weight car and has nearly 3 times the power. Amazing what a turbo

can add to a 1.9 diesel really.

Yeah i no mate as i have one also but the fuel and reliability make up for it.

I know how you feel. I used to have a Pug 106 with the 1.4 non turbo diesel engine. 50 bhp, 0-60 in 18 seconds. It was very slow, but you learned to live with it.

Treat yourself to a 1.9 tdi or vrs when you have the cash.

As an aside, if I drive my 1.9 tdi as slow as a sdi goes, I get around the 65 mpg mark.....I once got 70 mpg on a gentle 20 mile trip to work.....but I had to drive it slower than an sdi to get that!

So if you do eventually get a turbo fabia, your fuel bill won't go up as much as you might think.

That's true, I could get my vRS into high 50s driven

reasonably carefully. Low 60's if driven like an oap.

i can get 50-55 mpg out my vrs and im not the easiest driver

IF you want a bit of poke( not massive, but enough to make boy racers jealous), decent economy( 50 round town, and 45 at least on a long 90+mph trip) , decent handling, then when you can afford it -get a 1.4TDI. Nothing like big brother Vrs, but it's mapable to 100, and at that, with a lighter engine - it should be good. Problem is the front brakes- ypu'd have to uprate them .

A remap will certainly make it more sprightly but don't try to fool yourself. 68-80BHP in a relatively lardy car isn't going to be very quick.

More tunable would be the old VE pump turbo diesels... Pre PD system Golfs, Passats, 306s, Citroen ZXs.
