Nexus or Kindle Fire

Featured Replies

After a tablet for a bit of surfing and emails.

Asus Nexus 16GD £170 or Kindle Fire HD @ £159. ??????

both have same resolution screen,

Nexus Quad core processor vs Kindle 1.2 Ghz dual core.

Android Jelly bean vs High modded Android (I think!)

Opinions please!!

(and NO I don't want an Apple!!!!)

I'd go with the Nexus, the Fire is nice but you are tied to Amazon.

i quite fancy the Acer Iconia A110, jelly bean and micro sd

I can type really quite easily on my iPhone and iPad but for some reason the Fire keyboard just does not suit me at all.

If you are planning on sending a lot of emails I would get down to PC World and see how you get on with the keyboards.

There are other keyboards you can download. SwiftKey is also good

I got a Fire HD on Wednesday.

Things to bear in mind (bad)

You have to turn on download untrusted apps

You have to download a different browser to have flash (I use dolphin)

You have to download a different video player to view any videos you load (I use Moboplayer)

The app store is underpopulated compared to the standard google play one

You have to pay extra to turn off the adverts on the lock screen (or you can root it and void the warranty)

Things to bear in mind (good)

It's quick as hell (most responsive tablet I've used so far!)

The tie to amazon is great for SWMBO to get her nonsense books

The UI is a lot prettier that standard android

Speakers are loud and very clear, coped nicely with the new Batman film with no distortion at all

Screen is very responsive, even for my sausage fingers

All in all, I would recommend one IF you are happy to spend an evening setting it up with the extra apps to start with. Once that's done, it's an awesome little tablet.

Nexus is simply stunning. I've not used the kindle fire but from the reviews I've read it lags the nexus a bit in terms of power.

Try both if you can and see how you get on. Currys are discounting it ahead of the 32gb version coming out.

Thanks that's really helpful.

I already have a "normal" kindle for ebooks and don't envisage giving this up as I love the "readability" and massive battery life.

Judging from all the replies I am veering heavily toward the Nexus. Does anyone apart from Amazon sell the kindle fire yet??? it would be good to play with both side be side.

Thanks, Currys currently £189 in store/£169 web exclusive. PC World £169 in store and on web.

Both these brands are part of the same business I think.

Dad just got a Nexus and loves it. Went through the same process as you but didn't want to be tied to Amazon especially since you can install the Kindle app on the Nexus anyway. He'd read that there were adverts on the Fire to subsidise the cost, not sure if that's true or not.

You might want to look at a Blackberry Playbook too, cheaper than the others (Fire is basically a playbook).

Ready to part with the cash but neither Currys or PC World have stock in store :(

Just the one place that adverts appear, and that's the lock screen. They rotate every couple of hours and to be honest, I ended up following a couple to the amazon store and buying the product!

They're amazon adverts for stuff that's normally on offer so it's not all bad.

Fair enough, I don;t think that would bother me.

Nexus 7 every time but wait a few weeks because a 32gb version is due and still costing the same price as the current 16gb

Current list price for the 16 GB is £199 but Currys/PCW are doing them for £169. I presume the 32 Gb will come in at £199 with no discount.

Do I need 32GB?, doubt it for my purposes.

32 gb

more films?

Glad there is a 32gb option, that might seal the deal for the 7 for me as was a bit disappointed it didn't have an SD card slot.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" Wi-Fi 8GB is around £200 too.

Was looking to get one or the other in the Sales, but the 32gb Nexus is really swaying me.

Galaxy 2 doesn't get quite as good reviews - mainly down to lower resolution screen.

I'd have thought a larger screen res is better?

Yeah but Galaxy has a lower, therefore poor screen res.

Nexus - 1280 x 800

Galaxy -1024 x 600

What did you edit? :p

What did you edit? :p

just the spelling of Galaxy !

Was told by someone I was talking about the nexus 7 that the 16gb is going to be dropped in price soon on a promo with one of the electrical stores to around £140 in a week or so to shift some stock before the 32gb arrives in-store.
