Electric Windows Fail

Featured Replies

The electric windows in my Fabia have suddenly stopped working the switches on both the drivers side and passenger side do nothing.

I know these windows having issues is a common fault and just wanted some advice on where to start with diagnosing what could be causing the problem.

I assume the best place to start would be the fusebox?

Pull out the relevant fuses - clean them - and reinsert or put new ones in - the ones in my 2004vRS were rather thin and not connecting properly.

I had the same problem: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/238087-front-two-electric-windows-not-working/#entry2796202

- Cut a long story short there is an ECU built into the drivers side window motor.

- If this fails then it prevents both the drivers and passengers windows from working.

- Got a second hand one off ebay for £23 and popped it in and all was well!

When I took out the broken motor i found that it had a date of 2007 on it, and my car was made on 2004 - meaning it had been replaced already - so they seem to be a common fault.

Did some reading on those posts and saw people talking about resetting by using the key in the door. It worked! Happy days, windows now working fine. For now...

That resets the auto element of the closure - shouldn't affect the actual operation which seemed to be your problem.

See my response below.

Odd it was defo not working for two weeks and tried this morning and still not working. Did the reset as described by turning the key to the left and then to the right for a few seconds. The window started to lower. I then tested both windows with the switch and working fine.

Sorry - I was wrong - the manual actually states:

Electrically operated power windows do not operate

If the battery of the car has been disconnected and then reconnected, the electrically operated power windows do not operate. The system must be activated.

Proceed as follows in order to re-establish the function:

• turn the key in the lock of the driver door into the closing position and hold it there until all of the windows are closed,

• release the key,

• Once again insert the key and turn it into the closing position for about 3 seconds.

  • 1 year later...

I am wondering if this is the issue with my wife's 07 Fabia VRS SE, the front electrus Windows stopped working on NYE. I tried removing/re-inserting the 46 fuse and/or 58 fuse with limited success, ie both windows worked until the car was next locked/unlocked. I then noticed the car battery was pretty flat and not recharging properly (was original battery) so bought and fitted a new 096 type battery to it earlier this week. After doing the post 'reconnect battery' steps described on other posts and in the manual (reset radio code, test drive and reset electrics window with key in lock to close position for 3 secs, remove key & repeat), the windows fired into life and I thought I had solved it :-)

Unfortunately not :-( Today I checked the car and drivers side switches were not working at all, passenger side only works going down (irrespective of whether key is in ignition) and to get it back up you have to fiddle the switch to get it up 1/2cm at a time. I've had the drivers switch out and couldn't find any issues with it when I tested the electrical connections. The fact the windows have been intermittently working perfectly I don't think it is a physical connection. Having looked at haynes manual electrical diagrams, I'm v suspicious whether one of the control units has stopped working properly, particularly the one in the lock system that seems to tell both the windows to work on unlocking the car/ignition. The window motors/control units seem to be independent of each other according to Haynes. I was fearing this might be a job for the Skoda garage to resolve but might be worth a punt changing the drivers side window motor first, any advice appreciated!
