sluggish vrs at motorway speeds

Featured Replies

I apoligise if this is a silly and not very well worded question, but,

Recently at motorway speeds the car (mk2 vrs) seems sluggish and not as willing. Usually, i have to watch my speed as it easily passes 70 without you realizing, but recently it just seems more lethargic at 70-75 and it feels like im having to use more throttle than usual just to keep it at those speeds, then really having to give it some more to get it going for overtaking or what ever. The fuel consumption seems to have suffered as well, with it sitting at about 38mpg on a decent motorway trip (40 if i really try) when its usually at between 42-45mpg at speeds of 70-80mph.

i always use Shell V-Power, changed the plugs around 2000miles ago, tyre pressures are regularly checked and are fine, and oil was changed about 3000miles ago. On thursday i had to put about £20 of 95ron BP fuel in to get me home, but since then have put plenty of v-power back in. Around town it feels ok.

I know various factors can come into it on the motorway such as wind etc, but its just been annoying me.

Any idea's why this might be..? I'm sure i'm not imagining things!?

Thanks for your time.

Dirty air filter?

Have you driven it in anger recently? Try giving it beans from the start (obvs when oil is warm) and go through the rev range...

Are your tyres worn? Increasing rubber contact...

I'll have a look at the air filter but I changed it for a revo replacement panel filter earlier on in the year so would have thought it was ok but will check anyway.

Tyres are ok for the time being, and the car hasn't been driven right through the rev range for a while no. Will give that a try to.

Thanks for your suggestions

What plugs did you change to & what gap were they set at?

Did you change them or was it someone else, and why did you change the plugs,

what mileage has your car done?

I would stick in the original filter if you have it & see how things are.

was it a clean/good filter when removed?

Was it a Circular REVO filter you changed it for & did you do that or someone else do it for you?

ie, are you running a remap or tuning box or anything else done?

Changed to NGK BKR7EIX, and set to what ever they came out the box at. Changed the plugs because the car had done 10k, just had its first oil change, so I thought there was no harm in changing the plugs as well and making everything all nice and new.

I didn't change them myself, but I literally stood next to and watched the mechanic that did.

I'm approaching 12.5k on the clock. Done a thousand in the last week.

Air filter was changed by me and is exactly the same as the one in the guide. Original filter was fairly clean when taken out.

No remap or any other modifications.

Cheers.

I would try with an Original filter & see if things go back to feeling right.

Quite possibly it will do.

& if not,

no harm in getting those plugs checked to see that they are looking right.

Personally i think you wasted money changing them when that new.

I hope you kept the ones you removed.

Maybe worth after you have it feeling good again, try a few tanks of Tesco Momentum.

I am becoming less trustful of Shell Stations and the V Power tanks.

They seem to be a bit careless with their tanker refills & supplies. JMO Obviously

Check tyre pressures & do not just go by TPMS , cold weather check needed.

Yeh change the filter back to the more restrictive paper one and it will go! Sure it will!

It could be that if your used to v-power all the time an u sed u put some 95 Ron in the ECU has altered slightly to allow an it will take another tank or 2 to get bak to normal.

Also has said if you've been pottering aiming for high mpg it needs a good thrashing to live'un it bak up

Maybe your DSG has adopted a less "spirited" shift pattern from too many long, steady cruises or slow take-offs around town. Does the battery disconnect reset work on these cars??

Try pushing the accelerate right down for 20seconds while the ignition is on, resets the gearbox meaning it will adapt to your driving style

Try pushing the accelerate right down for 20seconds while the ignition is on, resets the gearbox meaning it will adapt to your driving style

But that trick is only confirmed to work on DSG6 boxes, nothing official for DSG7, isn't it? Some have said it's doing nothing on ours, me I couldn't really tell the difference....

A fresh/clean original filter is a known item & actually will be no more restrictive than a new Revo filter.

(It migfht well be better than a dirty or damp Revo filter)

As i said on the linked thread i tried a Revo filter on a Dyno.

If others have tried a Revo filter instead of the Original filter on a standard engine and have good results,

share them please.

It is an easy to check if it is running better with the clean one than on the Revo filter that might be dirty or damp.

It would be a free check if the old original filter was not binned.

'More efficient with as much as 30% more airflow over the original. improved throttle response'

thats the extent of their statement.

If it shows and improvement on a 1.4 tsi 'Twin Charger', someone might have the data.

Can I just say I don't drive round like a little old lady the whole time! :L. But thanks for your comments, I'll check the filter tomorrow morning. I've still got the old one. Someone said it was just as good to just take off the sock than buy a new one. I had a look at the ones they have on APR's sight, but they are about £90! Which seems a fair amount for what it is. And they need re-cleaning and oiling every 10-12k miles.

As for changing the spark plugs, they weren't in too bad condition but the car did feel a bit better with the new ones in at the time.

Tbh I thought you drove like a little old man... It's wouldn't be right to throw the gender issues in there aswel ;)

I have never owned or driven a VRS, but surely leaving the plugs set to whatever they came out the box is not ideal. From my days of fiddling with engines on cars and motorbikes it is essential to ensure the gap is set to the manufacturers recommendation to ensure the performance is correct throughout the rev range.

when I've done the long journeys recently though the roads have been pretty wet (I have taken this into consideration and its not the cause of the problem) so didn't want to floor it everywhere, plus was trying to save petrol as I was doing lots of miles, but my car obviously had other ideas!

Ok, so Tomorrow I will check the filter and set the gaps on the spark plugs. Hopefully if there is anything wrong that will sort it.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Mike

Here's the procedure Stumcl mentioned:

Switch off the ignition while stationary. Press the accelerator fully. At the end of the travel, you'll feel a click from a switch. Keep it pressed fully home beyond this switch point for 10 seconds plus, suggest 20 seconds to be sure. Release the accelerator pedal. Now start the engine as usual and go for a drive in the Scirocco as you would normally drive.

Insert fabia for scirocco lol

Cheers, will give that a try if it doesn't get any better. Another reason why I thought it would be good to change them in preperation for a remap, when I get round to it!

So ignition on or off; two recent posts are conflicting here.

I would have thought ignition on personally, but have no first hand knowledge of this.

Tony

Ignition off, I have done this a few times, you get no conformation that it has worked and most people say it doesn't do anything but after I do it the car drives very odd for the first couple of miles it changes gear differently and sometimes holds the gears too long and sometimes change too early as if it's calibrating. Then settles down after a few stop starts and a good blast foot to the floor in as many gears as you can, say from lights leading to a dual carriageway where you can floor it to 70mph (ofcourse)

+1

Must be ignition off then, been a while since iv done it so i forgot which

That explaains a lot then hopefully as far as my vRS is concerned having had a new engine installed plus the DSG software all reset. thought it was performing really odd this morning on my first drive after the work has been completed.

is one of these worth £90? any better than a revo or pipercross one? or are these after market ones worth the money at all? best to just stick to the standard one and maybe just take off the sock?

they are ITG filter elements, so if i was you, id go direct to ITG for them

  • Author

I did, I emailed ITG who said they were sold through their technical partners Volkswagen Racing. And then on VWR website it shows a list of places who stock VWR's products, so then seems like you have to go through someone else? They list JKM so I'll contact them, they might be a bit cheaper.
