PD 140 - Overboost and Emissions Workshop

Featured Replies

Hi,

As some of you already know I have been having overboost issues with my car since May, a local indy informed me that my driving style had made it worse, so that was changed by using more of the rev range. Since the change of driving, I was only experiencing 1 overboost (limp mode) a month, until the last couple of weeks. Lately I have experienced, on a run of 150 miles, that I tend to get three overboosts towards the last 50 miles of that journey. Last weekend, on the same journey, the car went into limp mode and 'Emissions ! Workshop' was displayed on the screen. Cycling the igniton resolves the limp mode and driving returns as normal, the warning however stays (yellow engine light on permenantly). I can clear the warning via VCDS but only to have it return sometime later. The following is a readout from the car prior to the DTC's being cleared:

Sorry, forgot to say the car has covered 116K miles

Hi Paul, would that also cause the emissions warning ?

Yes that is your issue, easiest way on a PD140 would be to drop the exhaust downpipe off of the turbo, best to get a new genuine clamp and gasket.

If you are doing it yourself make sure that you are safe working under the car, so always use ramps or axle stands.

Paul

'Emissions Workshop' really just means 'Oh look your engine management light has come on', for those posh people who have Maxidot ;-)

Or I need to talk to the dealers computer - hope you are still in warranty - LOL

Parent's Octavia had this ... diagnosed as the actuator arm having stuck.

yes sticky vanes causes this, mr muscle exhaust side of turbo

Seems strange though, I planned to carry out the Mr Muscle process a couple of weeks ago (got stuck as I wasn't too sure how to remove the exhaust clamp) but the actuator arm moved when pushed, a good cm or so

did it feel gritty? if it moves its prob just getting partially stuck

I didn't noice any gritty feeling, but there was a resistance there, would that be from the vacuum unit ?

It is possible that it it slow to react hence only getting over boost occasionally.

I'd go as far as saying I'm 100% confident that your over boost will be caused by a slow returning VNT mechanism.

You need to give it a good soak with the Mr Muscle and work the actuator. I'd then rinse it out with some brake cleaner, put it back together and take it for a good run.

Beware though that it will smoke a bit to start with.
