This is a very newbie post, but on my digital display under the speedo the word oil flashes up when I start the car with a spanner icon next to it! Now i've read up and know that it may say Oil Service etc. but there's no explanation for just the 'OIL' tag popping up, does anybody know what this means? Many thanks,

Pete

Sounds like the car is on variable servicing lol but the mk1 can't officially follow that type of servicing. How long have you had the car?

  • Author

ive had it just about 4 months now, it's a 53 plate so fairly mature!

Odd, perhaps somebody else can explain, I presume you've checked the oil?

  • Author

thanks for the quick reply anyway :-) yeh checked the oil and it was err'ing on the low side so I topped it right up but yet the warning is still there :-S

Does it flash 'INSP' or anything with the spanner? That means it is due a service unless it wasn't reset on last one (10k miles or 12 months) Never heard of the word 'OIL' on the dash.

I don't believe 100% that the vRS cannot be run on variable intervals, I'm sure something could be programmed or modified to allow this type of service. Mine has been on variable servicing in the past which is clear when looking in the service book.

Nah it's literally just 'OIL' which is why i'm really confused!

I'd say it's asking for a fresh oil change, that's my opinion! :)

kool, i'l have a look into that, cheers :-)

The Fabia has an alternating service, between OIL and INSP so the car is letting you know it needs an oil service.

thanks very much :-)

I would usually refer people to the manual at this point but amazingly the PDF version I have doesn't cover the word OIL appearing! Yes - it means you've covered nearly 10,000 miles but less than a year since your last service - it's absolutely nothing to do with the level of oil in the engine. However in practical terms, unless you're travelling over 20k per year it's actually more logical to have an Inspection service rather than an oil change one if you want to stick with Skoda's esoteric servicing schedule that somewhat defies logic.

Last time round OIL on my car came up and the time before that is was INSP so when I saw OIL last time I also wasn't sure what it meant.

Response to both of you.

It doesn't necessarily alternate - and I'll explain why.

For a Fabia doing 10k pa the service display should come up as INSP each time

For a Fabia doing 20k pa the service display should alternate between INSP and OIL

For a Fabia doing 30k pa the service display should cycle through OIL, OIL and INSP

For a Fabia doing 40k pa the service should cycle through OIL, OIL, OIL, and INSP

What I haven't experienced so don't know the answer for is what happens on a Fabia doing 15k pa. In theory after 8 months OIL appears since 10k has been covered and you have an oil change - then the theory goes that a further FOUR months later and only 5k miles more the INSP notification comes on. To obviate that, when I was doing 15k per year I was having an Inspection service at 8 monthly intervals to avoid having a service again after four months...

Ah right.

I think ours had done about 11k when we got OIL but can't remember how long it had been.

Ah well.

Will just wait to see what it wants next time! lol

Exactly the same showing on mine at the moment. Car was serviced 6k miles and 4 months ago. I have had the INSP spanner flash up before. Car has been serviced at 10k intervals all its life and now on 78k. Got it at 52k.

TBH I know when it needs servicing, what needs doing, and when it was last done. It's not a warning light so I just ignore, take it as a querk of the car, and service as per schedule. I count myself as (slightly) more intelligent than the onboard computer and as far as I'm aware there are no sensors to monitor oil condition etc. as required for variable servicing, which might make one take notice of the messages.

Interesting that not everyone has the car telling them to service it when it isn't due though.

Certainly on my 2004vRS the service warning rarely appeared - now I'm doing less mileage it seems more reliable at showing a service is needed

I have had 'OIL' and service spanner recently pop up on my dashboard. Does this reset automatically after an oil change or after a period of time (as this was changed less than 5 months/3000 miles ago). Or if not what do i need to do to clear the warning light?

Rhys

It doesn't reset automatically - it's set at the service - details in the handbook

Thanks will have a look

Just had the OIL spanner display appear in my car last night. The car had an oil change in June about 4000 miles ago. Does anyone know how to turn it off? Tried the instructions in the manual but it's still appearing.

With ignition off hold the odometer reset button and whilst holding it in switch the ignition on until it clears and shows ---- and that should be it. Works on my 05 vrs.

takin from autodata

push and hold the button A for resetting the mileage

turn ignition on

when oil appears let go of the button and turn the button to the right until the word OIL disappears
