I approve of your choice. It's a classic!

Agree :agree: - shows what a lot of car you can get for your money and have a lot left over. Respeck! Paul - looks like your life is changing but you're gonna get a whole lot of enjoyment out of it

Why is it called a "valver"? Surely all cars have valves ...

Valver = Mk2 slang for the 16V version

Am I right in saying its a 1.8 8v and not a 2.0, hence NOT the same engine as a Fabia 2.0... I thought that engine only got used in Mk 3 onwards...

Top looking motor too mate, and a decent price. If you look after it, you should never lose a penny on it!

The Mk 2 uses the 1.8 8v however some run-out models in 1992 used the 2.0 8v prior to the launch of the Mk3 Golf.

To answer the engine query, yes it is a 1.8 8v engine. Very simple looking it is too... The 2.0 engine in the Fabia is shared with the Mk3 and Mk4 GTI.

No they didn't.......No MK2 is a 2litre unless it has had an engine transplant!

Think you might mean that from '90 onwards all MK2's use the same fuseboard/wiring set up as the MK3's (VW used them as a test mule to make sure everything was ok for the mk3)

So if you are wanting to VR it or something the '90 spec cars are the ones to go for!!!!

All GTI's are either 1.8 8V or 1.8 16V, the german market also got the cool G60 GTI which had abs and lots of other toys!!!

I fitted a 2L 16V to my old MK2! Went like a rocket  Then some dozy bint in a corsa killed it and nearly killed me........

Check your facts and then get back to me.

As a regional host for CGTI for about 5 years I have never heard of a factory 2 litre MK2 GTI, not in the UK anyway!

The US got 2L Valvers to compensate for all the emissions crap that got dumped on them

Sorry but you'll have to prove it to me, then I'll eat humble pie :)

You've got me doubting my own sanity now. As far as I know a handful of Mk2's registered in 92 on a J plate actually had the 2.0 8v motor fitted. The only difference with the Mk3 lump was the fitment of a smaller throttle body in an attempt to de-tune it. Only a handful were ever sold due to the imminent arrival of the mk3 - again as far as I'm aware.

If I'm wrong I'd be interested to know then I'll get my coat :D

Beeftech...I've got a 2.0 litre 8V Fabia. The service manager at my dealership used to have a 2.0 8V Golf GTI' date=' and he told me that the Fabia I have is using the same engine, with more refinement. This is a guy who's been in the auto industry for more than 20 years.

Maybe at the time they weren't bringing in 2.0s into England. But it was definitely there, no doubt about it.

'Are' or 'were'? Because the new GTI has a turbo'd 2.0 lump.

I think he means mk2's.... the mk1 early ones had a 1.6, and the Mk3's were 2-litre I think. Mk4's came in various models... 1.8T, 2.0 (same as yours) and 1.9 TDI. The new'uns have the 2.0 FSI Turbo and will have the 2.0 TDI model (although not sure why they are bothering with this, the FSI Turbo already has very diesel like characteristics).

Anyway, I pick it up tonight :)

TBH, I've never heard of a factory 2.0 8V Mk2 GTI either.

Not saying it's not possible, but I'm waiting for one of my reliable resources to get back to me! :D

Was Talking about Mk2's as thought thats what this thread was all about :)

All Mk3 GTI's are 2L 8V's and 16V's, MK4's intially "Proper GTI" was 1.8T Fake CL badged GTI was 1.8 20V, then 'cos without a turbo this motor was gutless and poo they replaced it with the 2L X-Flow motor, a 10Bhp reduction but more Torque!!!!

Well I've just received the car today, and I've took it for a good run out across country, and I even had my first "race" in it too... against a brand new BMW 325i... well let me tell ya, I shocked this bloke good and proper, he could not pull much ground on me at all, and the bemused look on his face as I pulled up alongside afterwards was sheer comedy... I even gave the thumbs up, but that just seemed to make him even more confused

Anyway, its a great little car, handles wonderfully, it obviously needed a good run out, as its running so much better now, and I've put some optimax in the tank to perk it up. I've checked the book, and it weighs 940 kg, and has 112 bhp, so it is 119 bhp per tonne, which is in fact more than a Fabia vRS as standard (thats about 100 bhp per tonne)... and to be honest, I wouldnt be surprised if it was slightly quicker than the vRS having driven it. Maybe it just feels quicker because of its lighter weight and less luxury, I dunno, but it does feel quicker. The only area it loses out on is the torque, it obviously doesnt have as much as the Fabia and ingear performance is nowhere near as good, but then you can just drop a cog or two and it makes up for it. I suspect its top speed would be lower, but I think perhaps the Golf gets to around 120 a bit quicker.

The main thing for me is the noise, its really made me realise how much I miss petrol cars, and this little beasty sounds sweet! Also, the 8v revs better than I thought it would, although obviously the 16v will be better in that respect, and even faster, but at a cost, more insurance, higher running costs etc.

Well chuffed :D

This thread brings back a lot of GTI 8v memories, I had a couple of new ones in 1988 and a big bumper in 1990 both Tornado red best cars I ever owned. I know what you mean about the handling it was superb plus you could thrash these things around all day everyday and never break them the 8v engine pulls quite strong in the midrange if I remember much fun was had.

Is your car a 1990 onwards if so I still have a Momo steering wheel off my 1990 GTI quite similar to the original 4 spoke GTI wheel except all leather and very high quality.

PM me if your interested

I wanna drive one :(

I drove a Mk I once. Quite fun. Never driven one since, of any variant.

Glad you're enjoying it, Paul :D
