Pros and cons 1.9 tdi

Featured Replies

Going to test drive octavia elegance 59 plate 27k looks mint 1owner ,what are the pros and cons of this car,or should I push the boat out and go for the new 1.6tdi I only do 10 k a year.

cons - engine sounds a bit rough compared to modern diesels

pros - 1.9tdi is a well proven engine across the VAG range and very reliable / very good mpg

however since your mileage is very low, you may want to also consider test driving a petrol 1.8Tsi as well

With low miles that you are doing a petrol may be better as it should be cheaper to buy and service and the 1.8 TSi is a cracking motor.

I have just had one as a compay car and I drive quite hard. 98,000 miles in 23 months and had no real problem.

I was getting around 36-40 mpg on day to day driving but on a steady run from Skye to Glasgow 50-60 mph due to poor weather I managed to get 48.4 mpg out of it.

The 1.9 is a great motor as I ran one for a couple of years but the petrol is quieter and quicker.

The 1.8 TSi is something else.

If it's the 1.9 BXE it's well proven, very easy to work on, very remap friendly into 130 BHP figures, economy is quite good. Parts are readily available and cheap.

My major niggle is the loudness...you sure do notice the difference with the new 1.6 commonrail diesels!

Car giant have a couple in at the moment ... granted one has 92,000 mile but is a FL ,3 years old and can be had for £5,999!

I have the 1.8 Tsi and do 15,000 miles a year

I would not have a USED derv.... they seem to suffer many problems

The 1.8 Tsi is easily capable of 45 mpg has an 0-60 of 8 seconds and from 30-50 is like a rocket... not many cars give you all that!

Pro’s:

Better MPG

More mid range umph

No DPF (depending on age)

Con’s

Older technology

Noisier

Really pleased with mine so far. Av 55-6 mpg and goes well enough ( had mk1 vrs before).

There are some reports of conrods popping out the side of the block but I wouldn't read too much into it. Bxe block is used across vw, skoda, seat and Audi.

Got the 1.9 TDI in my Fabia estate, and it's a very good engine. Slightly less refined than the 2.0 TDI in my Octavia (that could be down to the acoustics of the different cars) but it pulls well and it is very economical......70 MPG is achievable on my Fabia.

Some may say that with doing 10,000 miles a year....a diesel is not worth it. Well, you'll still save £430 a year over say, someone in a 1.8T doing the same mileage....Include the insurance, tax and probable lesser depreciation.....you're saving more than just the fuel costs.

On the subject of the 1.8T, I'm sure PC1212 will be along any minute and tell you to buy a 1.8T

Damn........he already has!

Great engines. Slightly noiser than the newer diesels but very reliable hence why I went down the 1.9 route as apposed to the 2.0

If you are doing low miles, make sure you have a good run now and again to air the cop webs. I can understand getting one for the mpg, tax and residues. They cost more to buy, but then they are worth more when you sell it!

The 1.9 in the wife's Altea is the same 109PS VW PD engine and it's noisy compared to my vRS blackline and very noisy compared to my previous 1.4 TFSI petrol. Apparently they don't do the 1.8 TFSI anymore so if you want one it'd need to be 2nd hand. The 1.9pd gives about 42mpg with the wife driving, slightly more when I use it, but I don't know what it's like in an octy. the later 16v deisels will be better on MPG. My blackline is returning 50mpg. My previous 1.4 was a nice car, averaged 44 MPG over the 12 months I had it but lacked any real mid range stomp IMHO, but had reasonable acceleration once wound up. One thing not mentioned is what's your driving style like and what sort of journeys do you do? do you prefer a more relaxed drive with grunt rather than top end rush. if so deisel may be better for you. same if you do a lot of urban driving with fuel costs going up tho you'll need to factor in the extra cost of deisl comapred with unleaded. If you're up for a new car there's good offers on at the mo with the VAT back. I wouldn't have another 1.4, nice car but just a little short when it comes to overtaking capability on normal roads IHMO.

Damn........he already has!

lol Just trying to spread the love mate

I do miss my Bora 1.9 Tdi though...

Great engine even the 115 bhp lump was more than enough.... and I managed 70mpg once on a trip to Blackpool!

It had its oil changed every 5 thousand miles and I had a all 24 invoices to prove!

Im sure this is why it still ran sweet as a nut

Bought for £1400 sold after 2 years for...£1200!

With the 1.9 Tdi you should be able to avoid a DPF.

Just to be sure check the sticker on the boot floor. OGG = no DPF 7GG = DPF

Unfortunatley both are afflicted by DMFs. With the 1.9 you should at least be able to get a SMF conversion when the DMF starts to play up. I do not know if there is a conversion kit for the 1.6 Tdi.

These are only my opinions, there are those who are very enthusiastic about their DPFs and DMFs. You may already have your own views about them - if not best to do a bit of research on them before you buy.

The last 1.9 Octys (BXE eng.) never had a DPF fitted.

The Pros are:

Very economical

Enough power when required

Good PD punch of power

Bulletproof engine

Easy to maintain

Cons are:

Nothing

I don't find mine noisy at all compared to pre PD engines.

When I drove a 1.6tdi Octy as a loan car I found it very sluggish and have to work it harder. I wasn't impressed but that of course is my opinion.

Some people don't like the PD diesel chugging noise - but I think it's lovely!

I love the tractor noise of the PD engine too ;-)

not for long but next time ile do what my brother does he asks for it for half a day to get the proper feel for it,,,,,,,,,,,,

ime waiting for the new octy coming out and p/x it or may sell private

Will you go for a new Vrs or a standard model?

Another shameful plug for the 1.8 Tsi... just have a drive in one...

and give it some welly it really flies, its an understated quiet car that will leave the the repmobile TDi bunch for dead!

When I wanted to change my 1.4 TSI in September the dealer told me the 1.8 is no longer available on the octy II so I had to get a blackline instead :giggle:

Guess they're gearing up for Octy III so are restricting what you can get/are using up what they've got left.

It probally does fly the 1.8 but will use over double the amount of fuel :)
