few questions/niggles with RE: VRS

Featured Replies

im finding it hard to get 1st gear whilst rolling, you know the situation where 2nd will kill or stall the car (unless you slip it) but you cant get it into 1st without coming to a compleat stop........is this right? it wouldnt do it when new, but now it does ??

(2500miles on clock)

also - the exzaust - now, its a sporty car, and i like to hear a rummble, but the standard zaust doesnt give any sound to it.......isit possible to get a nice exzaust sound from a diesel??

It does take a bit longer to get it into 1st than the other gears, but I can still do it 18k miles on. Does it not go in at all? If not, could it be that the synchromesh is a bit sticky or something??? Probably wrong though...

I'll leave that prognosis to someone who knows.

I was under the impression that it's not really a good idea to change into first while rolling, same as not changing into reverse. Not sure if that's true. Considering it's very easy to pull away in second I cant see a time when you would need first after pulling away. Clutch control is all thats needed when slowing in second

the ammount of times im rolling at like 5mph, if i go and pull in 2nds that 1k rpm, which makes the engine labour or i slip the clutch, so i use 1st.....but because im still rolling, its hard to engage the gear

IIRC you should only engage 1st when stationary well that's what I was taught. I remember this from when I was taking driving lessons many many many years ago.

Same here Ivan, I only ever select 1st when stationary or moving at walking pace. I can still remember on one driving lesson many years ago trying to go from 4th to 3rd and somehow managed to end up in 1st, the car behind must of got a shock as we came to a near stop very quickly.

lol, well like you said, walking pace, which is what im doing.

i borrowed dads cav 1.7td once was coming home car pulled out my way i was ready to gun it, sliped down to 3rd thinking it was my 2.0 petrol cav, my face ended up on the windscreen and the car behind droped back ALOT lol

crazy days :D

I've still got a problem getting 1st gear whether stationary or slightly moving. Not quite as bad when the car's cold. It's being looked at next week as part of the 10k service, so I'll let you know. Was told by my dealer that Skoda won't let them look at this until the car's covered at least 5k.

Most cars with close-ish-ratio gearboxes use 1st only to start moving, or for queueing.

I actually use it regularly and let the anti-stall pull the car forward at sluggish speeds, using the clutch gently when letting it bite again.

driving instructor here! *waves... You should put it in 1st just as you're comming to a stop (very slow roll) It's ok to ride the clutch a bit in second if you wanna,(or nudge first at tickover, which someone above mentioned, I do that too..) but that will just wear your clutch if done too much too slow in second, I use my furby vRS to teach in, and it goes into first very nicely at a slow roll , with no complaints or effort needed, no notchiness or anything like that, in fact one of the best 'boxes I've come accross! If yours wont go into first at a slow roll easy, you should DEFFO get it checked! :)

mine is ok to get into 1st at a slow roll too... Most modern cars are I thought - something to do with syncromesh???

hmm, all the gears seem to have gone abit notchey lately, think i'll goto dealer, get them to take a look.

ALSO, if i have my cd player on fairly loud, the backlight of the cd player dimms to the bass of a song, now this isnt right!!!

what the hell could that be!!???

You mean when there's a kick drum playing the light dims to the beat? That's pretty normal...but I do believe it means it's taking more power than it should to produce that level...I could be wrong though...otherwise, don't worry about it, I have the same thing in mine...I actually think it looks kinda nice:D
