Winter tyres, what size of tyres are the smallest a vRS can take?

Featured Replies

I was thinking about putting a couple of winter tyres on the front of my vRS but as it has the 18" alloys on they seem the most expensive ones! Will it be better to buy some smaller alloys, 16"?? And put some winter tyres on those? Thanks

16'' fits, I have them on mine, with 205/55 tires.

Yes, 16" is the smallest diameter wheel that will clear the front brakes. We also run 205/55/16s - it's the same size as the spare wheel that Skoda supply with the car (unless your car has the compressor and gunk instead).

However, you say you're just going to put them on the front - DON'T!!!! With lots of grip up front and none at the back you risk horrendous uncontrollable oversteer. Fit a matching set of four.

Yep, winters just on the front is a recipe for disaster. The rear axle will have a far lower grip limit if you do that, which won't end well if the weather gets bad.

I run 17s as I don't like the look of 16s, like look tiny on the car when you're used to 18s :)

17s can be run in 225/45/17 or 215/50/17 if you want a slightly narrower tyre width in winter conditions, and a bit more sidewall. I have a set of 17s for sale at the moment with winter rubber fitted, if you wanted a set to swap straight over to.

Thanks guys, wardy ill have a look at your thread

16 fitted to mine, they do not look that bad. Easier to get 16's and cheaper too. Far more in the VAG range have 16's to which owners upgrade to bigger rims

This video shows why you should only fit winters to all 4 wheels.

4 16" steels shod with Hankook winter tyres £460 from Rainworth Skoda - fitted, balanced and delivered.

30 mins to take off the alloys & put on car.

BTW, the black steel wheels & higher profile tyres fill the arches nicely. Almost exactly the same rolling diameter as the 18s with lower profile summer rubber.

VERY pleased with them.

so will these fit the vRS?

215/60/16 winter tyres on genuine VW steel wheels (5 x 112.00 x 57.00)

Yes but i'm sure the profile is a tad high, it should be a 55 series tyre instead of the 60 series in your post. Will make the speedo read a little out.

18" if you've got 345mm brakes :'(

You have our sympathy Harry ;)
