F****** coil packs

Featured Replies

Well, having sold my old Octy RS to a mate, only for the coil packs to give up, we managed to get the local dealer to replace them foc even though the car is out of warranty. Score :)

Sadly it doesn't end there. Just one week later, and the car is now very sick. It ran fine for a few days after, but the exhaust note became tinny, and the turbo seems to be on holidays. Brought the car back to the dealer who diagnosed a blown gasket at the exhaust manifold  . It sounds like the exhaust got choked and the pressure built-up and eventually blew a gasket. The dealers have ordered in a replacement gasket, but to me, that is treating a symptom rather than treating the cause. The car was only driven for 20 miles after the coil pack went. No warning light has come on since the coil pack was replaced, which makes me think that all sensors in the exhaust system are covered in soot.

My question is, should the dealer not have checked for damage to the exhaust/ cat? I'm guessing the exhaust was partially blocked when the coil packs were replaced, and eventually blocked up completely, causing a pressure build-up until the gasket popped.

From a legal stand point, I feel there is a certain amount of responsibility on the shoulders of the dealer. Anyone else have similar trouble, or can offer advice?

... And can anyone give me an idea if it is likely that the cat has had it? Exhaust seems to be blocked somewhere.... must have been for the gasket to blow.

If a coil pack fails then this may lead to unburnt fuel in the exhaust which could well lead to the cat overheating and suffering damage. The Owner's Manual advises that you should reduce speed immediately in the event of misfiring, loss of power and engine rough running when driving, and have the fault rectified at the nearest Skoda Dealer. How many coilpacks failed - to have more than one fail at a time would be most unusual - and was the car driven any distance in that condition? I would doubt that coilpack failure would lead to soot on the Lambda probes since the fuel is either being burnt cleanly or not at all.

I have just spoken to my local exhaust specialist who advises that if a cat fails due to overheating it can break up internally and pieces may well migrate down the exhaust and block the following section. The cure would then be to replace the cat and the section downstream of it. Not good news...

It was driven about 20 miles at approx. 30mph to the dealers after the problem was noticed. It was No. 2 coil pack that went, but all 4 were replaced even though it was out of warranty.

My contention will be that the coil pack failure should not have happened had the dealer changed them in accordance with the bulletin (i.e. during routine inspections). Had they done this, my mate would not be having the bucket laods of trouble that he is facing now (i.e. cat/ gasket/ turbo/ etc.)

:) Pity you are not more local as i still have my OE cat in the garage....:o

Replaced my front pipe gasket when i put the race cat; on...only cost a fiver, the original one is very weak as my 03 plate had done only 20k when i changed it and it fell to pieces.

Catalyst meltdown normally only occurs if car is driven hard and for a long while with a missfire problem....he could always knock the internals out but may risk an ECL light coming on

Thread split since this is a topic in its own right!

:iagree: I argued the point with Skoda Ireland when I noticed I had the bad version. It ended up costing them the price of a tow truck due to not listening :D

Hopefully you get sorted ASAP.
