Felicia 1.9 sudden ignition fail

Featured Replies

Hello everyone I'm new here. I have been browsing posts just in case I can see a solution to my problem but haven't seen something exactly like it.

My Skoda drives like a tank, solid as a rock. Just over a year or so ago it had starter motor (and constituent parts) replaced, as well as glow plugs. Same with battery. I pulled up and parked the other night, all fine. Next morning it wouldn't start.

All lights on but glow plugs: this light was dim & unnaturally quick-flickering (ie seemed to imply 'issue'). The engine just won't fire up.

Layman advice has been 'check fuse box'. Any kneejerk reactions? My local garage isn't close and the cost to tow it will be over £50.

I like the car a lot and would hate to scrap it, but weighing up all cost options, the margin is getting thin.

Have you checked the big red 50 amp (I think) fuse which is under the bonnet on the passenger side. These fatigue and crack over time.

I had something a bit similar to this, It turned out to be the drivers interior light door switch sticking. This is connected to the glow plug loom to pre heat the plugs every time you open the door. If it is stuck half way like mine was, it just turns the engine over without it ever starting. It still sticks from time to time, a bit of wd40 and a wiggle frees it. Dunno if it'l help but worth having a look at.

One more thing re fuses. Dad and I spent a bloody day once trying to get the rear fog light to work. Fuses all looked fine at first glance we had instruments/switches out of both of our fellys trying to get it working. We had just about given up when I was fiddling about with the fuses and swaped the fog light one with another.... bingo it worked. On closer inspection, the fuse had broken, not blown where the fuse wire joins the pin. Carefully check the fuses, don't always assume they are fine at a glance. I can garuntee it'll never ever happen to me again, but that'll always be a first port of call.

Hope you can resolve your issue.

I'd also check the battery charge level; you're looking for about 12v with everything off for a healthy battery.
