Off and on, on call

Featured Replies

Hi guys, basically Im starting a new job tomorrow and ill be on call as a retained fireman, just wondering how much this will effect my car being started at all hours (driven straight away at speed limits) and switched off about 3-4 minutes afterwards once at station hoping to have it back within the next few days after having a hybrid so just wondering if there are any precautions or tips there are to be had

Just dont go high up the revs and you should be fine! or Red-Line it i should say!

Cheers mate, i've seen stuff in here about turbo timers and oil warmers and know nothing about them, ill just take it easy :)

Putting a turbo timer in the car would be quite difficult id imagine!

SAve yourself the hassle and just take it easy for 5 mins then give it the beans!

Also maybe once a month giving it a good run out to "stretch it's legs" - esp if your only doing a few minutes a time.

If he's a retained firefighter he needs to be at station within 5 mins! Lol

You can still drive well at/over the limit while keeping the rev's down.

Well done for getting in as Retained... I'm currently Retained in Lincolnshire F&R.

When i had my Fabia i used to just try keep it off boost. So shift just as the torque starts to roll in. I'd probably suggest changing the oil more often just as a precautionary measure.

Good luck with your new job, and get ready for the adrenaline rush the first time your alerter goes off! Just dont go rushing to the station for a test call! Or things on tv that sound similar to your alerter! The amount of times i've jumped up and then realised it's the tv!!

Why thank you matt

Cheers mate :) ohh... You get a lot of calls there?

I see, the station is up a hill across then up a steeper hill from my house :( so slight boost will be needed :( at the moment I'm catching all my shouts but still on probation so another two weeks or so before I'm allowed out :( so when I get my own car back I think ill be taking it a bit slower lol

Ye will do, every 78k or so be alright?

Ye i've jumped up at a few test calls but thankfully realised before I left the house lol :p

I think I'm going to get one fitted, my mates dad fitted his on his Ibiza fr so should be easy he said :giggle atleast I can leave it run down properly outside the station then :) the car will be safe as houses outside the station :)

I'd think about running thinner oil.

Any disadvantages?

Thinner oil pumps better when cold, only disadvantage is price. I would look for something like 0w30 or 0w40.

Ok, thank you mate :) ill have a look into it and get on the case :)

How far away are you from the station?! Given it`ll take a while for the oil to get up to normal operating temperature, let alone hot enough to cause any issues switching off instantly I`m not sure a TT will help at all in this situation. You can drive very quickly up to 80mph without taking the car much over 2000-2500rpm, changing up nice and early. Driving this way means your not thrashing the engine cold and when you arrive you can switch the car off straight away.

I`v read lots about Turbo Timers over the years, seems like a huge amount of effort (immobiliser removal/security issues/insurance issues/not allowed to leave a car running by itself etc etc) for the same result that can be achieved by just plonking the car into a higher gear near the end of your trip.

About 2/3 of a mile... Up hill though from my house, and it's a big'un lol plastered in speed bumps too lol but I'm guna give It a few practise runs when I get my car back, my main concern is its a new hybrid so just wana be extra careful, but ye ill give it a go without going into turbo. (Usually 2.2k revs ye?) ye leaving my car running isn't a preferred choice, I struggle to leave my car most places let alone running haha :p

J.E

Sounds crazy, but if it's not that far, and there's speed bumps I think I'd be tempted to find a cheap moped and use that to death..

I'm glad i live on the same road which is a short stretch of 30mph :)

Moped idea makes sense - won't need de-icing in the winter months either - just put a towel or something over the saddle! :)

Lol that is a good Idea I must say, but unfortunately I'm extremely unsafe on two wheels lol, four is my forte lol is with the winter/ ice I'd imagine a good few offs lol

J.E

I would suggest running :p

  • Author

Haha, I can't see that happening lol :p
