Climatronic heating

Featured Replies

Hello gang,

I have begun heating the Yeti cabin now its November (it gets chilly in the middle east too...)

I have the feeling the heating gets the aircon compressor going (which is not fuel efficient) rather than relying on the engine generated heat, like in my older cars.

Am I right?

Thanks.

No - engine heat is used to warm the cabin.

Hello oriki and others...

First of all - no - the compressor doesn't work for heating as home AC. It may work (only cooling) if you leave it on or in AUTO mode -you have to make your own "trial & error" aside reading the manual, to understand the "brain" of the CLIMATRONIC.

Pressing the windshield intensive defrost button (first from left on the upper row) invokes the AC compressor in order to dry the air - no matter in wich mode the CLIMATRONIC is. It is not enough just to turn the temperature control to maximum (clockwise), while the AC is on. You have to turn off the AC button. Note also that the CLIMATRONIC has memory - so far I have noticed - for AC cooling. I know, its somewhat messy compared to classic 3 dials (temp., fan & air outlet selector) system.

Using the windscreen demist button puts on the air con as well and clears the windscreen very quickly.

if you turn off the air con the screen wont demist as its just blowing moist warm air over the screen.

The air con produces DRY air which rapidly evaporates away the mist from the glass.

In the days before air con you would whack up the heater to full and blast the windscreen with hot air.

the air was still moist of course but heating it up enabled it to evaporate off the mist from the screen.

air con is much better at doing the job.

I press the heated front screen button to clear my windscreen.

Never used the climatronic one for that.

The key remembers the climatronic settings, so wifey has hers on a different setting to me.

Air con only works above I think 5 degrees C. Even if the button is 'on'.

I've had climatronic on my last 4 cars and it is great. Set to 22 and forget. Leave on auto, low all the time. In the heat of summer I might lower it to 20 and put it on the high auto setting. Never use any other setting. No need to.

Having moved from a Golf Mk4 to a Yeti both with climate control I am finding that I have to use the full demist setting far more to keep the windscreen clear than I used to.

In the Golf I left the CC on at 20/21 all year round and rarely needed to change anything once the engine had warmed up which took ages on the 1.9 PD diesel.

Heated windscreen was one option which I really wanted but which isnt available on the Greenline version.
