Gearbox leak

Featured Replies

Hi, the gearbox on my 1.9d has started leaking quite badly from the oil seal where the selector rod enters gearbox. Are these seals easily available? And is it a easy fix?

Cheers dan

Yes, that seal is about £2 from the skoda dealer, it's fairly easy to fit too, you just need to knock out the roll pin from the gear linkage to separate it from the selector rod and your in business.

Thanks for reply, do I need to align the selector rod back up properly to get all the gears or does this not affect it

No this doesnt affect gear selection, you dont have to worry about aligning anything or adjusting it, when you go to put it back together just get the selector rod lined up with the hole and tap the roll pin back in... Normally the roll pin is covered by a clippy thing that you have to bust to get off, I usually just put a jubilee clip on there afterwards.

That's good, another quick question need to do the shock front top mounts for mot, do I need to remove the shock or will it drop down enough to replace with the bottom still in place

No, you'll need to drop the whole thing out, make sure you compress the coil spring before you undo the top nut on the damper.

Ok thanks for the quick replies

I've just renewed the entire linkage on mine and it was straight forward as has been said... the worst bit was trying to get the new spring pin to fit, I spent about an hour swearing at it so I could enlighten all my neighbours as to how p*ssed off I was. In the end I used the old pin, which doesn't seem to be slack and whacked a jubilee clip over it. I forgot to do the oil seal though and it has a slight weep. Buggery.

I also recently replaced the linkage, mine had a nut and bolt instead of the correct roll pin. I had ordered a new roll pin with the linkage, but I'd lost it before doing the job, the nut and bolt went back in and doing the roll pin is on my list of things to do (that'll probably never get done as the nut and bolt work fine!)

There is also a bellows dust cover thingy where the inout shaft goes in. My very helpful bloke in the local skoda dealer told me not to worry about that bit. The new seal didn't completely solve the issue but it has slowed t down to the point where I don't need to worry about gearbox oil levels.
