Any Downsides to LSD

Featured Replies

ive had Quaife and Peloquin and imo any lsd in these cars transforms them massively

haent tried wavetrac but looking at spec and speaking to someone who did there research they would be the choice lsd at the moment

in real terms its actually amazing just how much more grip there is and the amount of speed you can carry around a corner !!! the key with any front wheel drive car once commited stay commited or it will bite you on the bum

Superb bits of kit - they add another dimension to driving

Between us devontopia, Steevie Wonder & myself have a good few years experrience of running Peloquin's

Peloquin do the largest range of diffs for VW/VAG

What much more important than what brand of diff, is the setup of the car - basically the ability of your suspension to keep your tyres in contact with the ground, and of your brakes to stop you.

Is there any downsides to a Limited slip differential for everyday usability?

Sadly yes

# Increased mileage

You will want to drive the car more, you will want to use twisty R roads not boring N roads
;)

# Increased mpg (exponentially greater than your increased mileage)

You will drive faster

# Increased wear on bushes, ball joints, etc

Because you're driving more and harder

Does it mess up the ASR with faults or anything?

Nope

At low speed ( < 25mph on fwd ) the EDL works a treat with a diff

As long as your tyres have grip, the diff will give you extra traction in all conditions

eg diffs are no substitute for good tyres

I get the idea of once you lose grip, you've lost it. and it may be tougher than just lifting off to get grip back but at that stage you really are pushing it aren't you? Much more down to road surface camber etc with one..

That is fundamentally the key - you're moving faster, you simply got less time to react

so if you are reacting, you're fooked

You should have planned for some slide - the lsd diff will find traction again quicker than an open diff ;)

Sounds really good lads cheers! I'm very tempted...

Unless you do alot of track days i personally wouldn't bother investing that sort of dollar into a road car. For that price you can start looking at different turbo's or a better suspension setup

I wouldn't say that. A diff will make more difference to the handeling that changing the suspension will and allow better better use of the power he has.

No point in having xxx bhp if all you can do with it is spin the wheels.

If you where limited to only making 1 single mod a otherwise oem octavia, fwd or 4x4, it would a front transaxle diff

They operate at all driving speeds, and aid any driving style

ps

that doesn't mean I'd advise that's all you need to do ;)

I have rear Sway bar, and decent brake discs and pads, Polybushed dog bone. I'm not one to be upset if my car isn't making whatever horsepower more about how it feels to drive. at the minute I would say the weak link of the car is the confidence I have in cornering, not how fast I got to the corner. When I get the money together I will be investing in upgraded suspension but at the minute mine is in good condition so it's not top of my priorities.

Yes indeed I have a wavetrac installed in my gearbox. Together with solid flywheel and VR6 clutch. Is it worth it ? Every dam penny it is. The grip is phenomenal and not at all a ditch finder. Go get one fitted and thank me later. Regards Pete.

what's the point in adding power if you can't apply it??

i have a quaife diff in mine and it certainly is'nt a ditch finder.even when running the car in (not going easy on it by any meens) it just felt planted going in the direction i point it in! its especially noticeable when pulling away at speed from a wet junction...you just seem to pull away cleanly with no fuss.not a very technical description but i have'nt driven the car for ages.i'll know more about how it behaves when the car is mapped.maybe the design of quaife diffs has been altered slightly these days to soften them up? if it has'nt maybe some drivers are expecting the diff to make up for a lack of talent!! as in they can just chuck it about and it'll be fine because i've got a diff!!!

WOOPS - LSD -I'm a kid of the 60's ,and it means a lot more to me. Keep on taking the tabs.

1 negative aspect: they are 'ing expensive!

I have Peloquin LSD, it needs time to get use to it because when cornering really hard it tends to pull you into the bend while "normal" open diff "pulls" you out but definitely the one of the best mod you can do. Another thing to keep in mind is that on FWD its really hard to transfer all that power on wheel without spinning them. My octy has 230hp and before lsd wheels where spinning like crazy especially if it was raining but after little to none.

IWOOT

I selling mine
